There are lots of great band that are no longer around. ChalkCircle, NorthernPikes, Truimph to name a few.

Solid music. None of this techno-dance-house crap.

I hear you crooks... I was at a bowling birthday party last week, and they played that techno stuff , and it was crap. couldn't hear yourself breath, much less talk. Nobody knew the tunes, and I got a huge headache from it.

I love Doug and the Slugs too, and Hot Hot Heat.

IME is still around, just with a different singer (and I still like their stuff).

I support every Canadian band out there, with the single glaring exception of... Simple Plan. If I could, I would slap their singer in the face and tell him to man up then set their instruments on fire and steal their money.

Favourite Canadian bands/artists (I'll probably forget a couple): Swollen Members, Default, The Guess Who, K-OS, Rascalz, Kardinal, Maestro Fresh Wes, Finger 11, and Sum 41. edit: Oh, if Steppenwolf is/was Canadian, add them to my list too.

There's JoyDrop...not really my cup of tea but my friend used to be their promoter. A great band to party with!!!

Yep, Triumph was good in its time. Rick Emmet did some nice work.

And don't forget Streetheart, a damn good band in its own right that later evolved into Loverboy.

And what about BTO? Those guys put Canadian hard rock on the map in the '70s.

And I'd add The Guess Who. Burton Cummings has one of the purest voices in rock and roll.

(The Headpins were a helluva band, too. The lead singer, Darby Mills, had leather lungs. Loud.)

I LOVE 54'40! everything they did. I think that they are still active, didn't they have a hit about 2 yrs ago?

And what about Teenage Head? They have a new cd out...

There's also a great band out of Hamilton: Blackie & the Rodeo Kings (I've had enough of You ) and his earlier band that did 'Shine'.

To be candid, I don't know.

l've been listening to the radio less and less over the past few years because I find much of the contemporary music god-awful (not all of it, mind you, but much). So I don't know if they've had a recent hit or not. For their sake, I hope they've had a hit.

They deserve it.

The band has been around for a long time...twenty years.

Note: correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand 54*40 has gone over to their own indie label now after their ten-year contract with Warner expired. A good move, I say. They have a very loyal fan base. I expect they'll do well with this new venture.

It's actually really hard to explain, and a lot of bands with very different sounds get bunched into the genre. Some bands I consider post-rock are:

54*40: I had to go to their website, they had an album out last year. (forever flatland i think).

I think that the hit they had a couple of years ago was called Casual Conversations. it was good. I like the lower voices, that's why I liked Junkhouse, and now Blackie & the Rodeo Kings. (I also liked crashtestdummies).

I'll have to try out Godspeed You Black Emperor! as everybody seems to mention it. Give me an idea what post punk means.

I remember Doug & the Slugs. My sisters and me used to sing chinatown calculation all the time!

Wow! I'm impressed at the mentions for Godspeed You Black Emperors. I thought they were truly obscure... ANYWAY, they're not the greatest Canadian band.

The Hip is. Plain and simple. They're the best band. Neil Young is the best songwriter.

I'm not going to name the best, but a few whom I think deserve mention.

Kim Mitchell is from my town (my mother actually knew him in high school), but I like his music anyway so he gets my vote too.

I just caught VH1's Listed on Much More Music at lunch time. Sam Roberts made it as Number 20, to the top twenty hottest male rock personalities. Whoo hoo! Of course Elvis was number 1.

anyone heard the new simple plan album? It totally rocks my socks. They're definitely getting an extra vote from me here now.

Ahh, don't forget the side project of Broken Social Scene, Stars; which BSS is a somewhat side of Godspeed!
