Dum sum experiences? - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

I have been intrested to try dim sum but can't find any restaurant here with more than 3 versions on menu. We have many good Japanese places in Finland, but the Chinese are average at best while most commonly just take-away "quality".

It's usually better to have tasted a food and seen what's it supposed to be like before starting to experiment in own kitchen, but that's not an option for me. I have a good cookbook on dim sum and I need to invest in a bamboo steamer.

Anybody have any advice, experinces or suggestions to share before I start?

I've eaten a lot, but never cooked any of it. I love it, but I'm not inclined to cook. My favorite thing about going to dim sum is the huge variety of little foods. It just doesn't seem worth it to cook for just a few people.

With that in mind, I'd go for the steamed dishes wrapped in the rice pasta stuff. They're probably the easiest and you could cook a variety in the same steamer.

Is Dim Sum basically Yum Cha?? Cos in Australia we got heaps of those places..V Good place to eat

Crystal Shrimp Hai Kow
Steamed Dumplings
Pan fried dumplings
Char Sui Bao
Steamed pork bun
Sui Mai

those are all chinese dim sum that you can or should be able to get at most chinese restaurants.

mmmm dim sum...Vancouver has lots of em'.
I don't think I'd ever try making it myself because there are so many good restaurants all around me.

I went to a dim sum restaurant in China town, NYC. They probably had almost a hundred different types.

Do you have big China towns in Finland? that's probably the obvious place to go looking.

one of the best things about dim sum is the scallion pancake. If you can't find them at an asian grocery, they're fairly easy to make from scratch.

yum cha means "having tea" in cantonese

Wheraas dim sum is name for small portions of chinese food

I doubt any of you tried REAL dim sum. Just go to any restaurent in hong kong (no, i'm not from hong kong)

BTW, you don't *NEED* a bamboo steamer

a wok with water, and a bowl in the middle, with the food in it does pretty okay
