Potatoes

Not sure if this should be here or the Health & Fitness board, but what the hell.

My wife has just decided she needs to lose weight. Now, this girl is a lean size 8, so don't ask me. Must be something deep and bizare in the female brain. The girl is too thin for the 27 inch hipster jeans I bought her on my last trip overseas!

Anyway, she has (in her infinite wisdom) chosen a "low-carb diet". To be honest, I think most of these diets are 50/50 common sense and bunkum. But that's not the point.

The main issue I'm struggling with is the "low carb" deal. This means, much to my utter horror, no more potatoes.

I LOVE potatoes.

They're my favourite vegetable, and I like vegetables.

Being an Irishman, I'm sure there will be some corny or smart-arse comments, but seriously... it really has to be the King of Vegetables.

There are SO many things you can do with them. They taste so good!

How am I going to last?

Mr Mephisto

PS - I also have to give up nice fresh bread.... Oh my God... Help me....

You have my sympathy my friend, you really do. I don't think I could put up with not eating carbs. I just use moderation instead of cutting somthing out of my diet. Keeps me happy and trim.
Good luck.

Did I miss something? Why has your wife's need to complicate her diet got anything to do with you? If she refuses now to even look at carbohydrates, then just make your own chips with every meal. You could empty a drawer out and call it Mephisto's Drawer of Fun. Fill it with crisps, choc, bread, rice, pasta, pastry, and make a point of delving in whenever she gets the ryvita out. That way she'll have two or so days of healthy living before she cracks and joins you in a massive steak with pommes dauphinoises -forgetting all these silly ideas with one revelatory bite.

SMASH!!!! That has absolutely NO Potatoes innit, although probably loads of Carbs!

Best way I found to cut the Carbs was to only allow 1 portion a day. 1 sandwich or 1 mash (no butter), or 1 muffin. You don't have to cut them out completely unless you are trying to drop a stone (14lbs) before your next concert tour. Do it slowly over a month and you'll/(she) see the difference.

As for Smart ass comments, just don't point the SpudGun at your mate , yes I know I am going to hell.

Yeah, I guess the best way is to reduce carbs, not eliminate them entirely.

Personally, I think this is all nonesense. I weigh 75kg and am 175cm high. Ideal weight for my size.

My wife is even trimmer.

Damn that self-critical female mind! Damn it to Hell!!!!

Baked potatoes in the microwave take, what, 10 or 12 minutes. Do it yourself. If she glowers at you, remind her that it's her diet, not yours.

Don't know what kind of microwave you are using, but a baked potato in mine takes about 3-4 minutes...

Of course, all my hair fell out recently, so you never know...

Only an irishman would talk about a potato as a vegetable where diet is concerned.

I do love them, prepared to just about anyway - including raw, but excluding potato chips ( with the exception of sea salt & vinegar)

don't forget that boiled potatoes have less carbs then baked potatoes.
will she let you eat sweet potatoes. they can be fixed many ways. i like em mashed with roasted garlic and a hint of butter, or mashed with chives and fresh pepper/sea salt.

also hide some in your sandwiches. crunchy goodness

Sweet potatoes are horrible...

Well, not horrible, but not anything like my secret desire... buttery mash.

Mmmmm.... mash....

Or better still, nice roast potatoes, straight out of the oven, crispy and brown on the outside, but light, fluffy and steaming inside. A chunk of butter melting over them and some real gravy (none of that "out of the packet" nonesense) and I'm in heaven...

God, I'm actually salivating writing this!

hahah

Mr Mephisto

PS - She hasn't banned carbs, and is as tempted as me, but I think we are in a "controlled carb" eating plan. Apparently, people don't go on diets anymore. They're "eating plans"...

LOL
