Episode 3 for a 11 yr old girl?

I haven't seen the movie yet, so go easy on the spoilers. We are going to see it this weekend, and since its PG-13 just wondering if there are any scenes that would be disturbing to an 11 year old.

Usually we preview PG-13 films and have let her see a few, like LoTR movies, since it's fantasy violence we know she's able to differentiate.

Interesting that you should ask this question.

We are taking my 11 and 9 year olds tonight to see it.

Spoiler: According to my friend who had another friend see and report on it last night, it isn't too bad. Lots of people die via blasters, some arms are light-sabered off (no blood spurting) and all the children padawan learners in the Jedi temple are killed near the end but no guts and blood spraying everywhere.

From the discriptions it isn't any worse than the other Star Wars, if you can use them for your guide. I remember seeing the charred corpses of Owen and Baru Lars in IV and thinking that was pretty grim.

There is a scene in the middle that shocked me with it's implied violence and horror.

Spoiler: Anikin goes to the Jedi temple and murders all the children in training, the violence occurs off screen but the implication is quite shocking .

I would say no to taking an 11 based on that also:
Spoiler: heads get lopped off, arms and legs are chopped off and right at the end Anikin falls into lava and is burned alive...lots of screaming and graphic flesh burning.

Yes, it's fine.

It's PG-13, but most importantly, it's just Star Wars.

Hell, Alien Vs. Predator was PG-13.

I'm sure most people growing up even snuck in a good horror movie or two (Exorcist?) and they grew up fine

11 is probably ok, but i think i'm leaning very heavily toward not taking my boys (ages 7 and 4) even though they want to see it.

It would be cool for a 11 year old. I took my niece she went nut's over how cute R2-D2 was and how cute yoda was and how cute just about every thing was,
she wants a R2-D2 toy now. I don't remember seeing any blood.

I'm guessing you don't have children, Stompy. Episode III is NOT "just Star Wars", Lucas himself even warned that this is the darkest and most intense of the films and that parents should re-consider just letting their young children watch the film the way they watched the other five.

Catdaddy, as a parent, you know your kids and what scares them and what doesn't. Personally, I don't think my 4 year old son will be watching this for a year or so, but who knows. Maybe for Christmas when it's on DVD, maybe not. I think the Parent's Guide is a pretty good bit of info to go by, check it out.

I would imagine that yes, most 11 year olds will not see much in this movie that would damage them much, or that they haven't seen before (with the exception of Anakin Flambé) but that's easy to say when you aren't talking about your 11 year old. So take your own advice, watch it yourself first so you know what to expect and when to give her that suggested Parental Guidance, then take her to see it.

sure, but parents being parents are trying to be involved, which most people like you if i recall correctly believe that parents should be monitoring what the kids watch et. al.

here's one that is trying, and you're stating, "don't worry about it...."

Thanks for all the input!

I'm leaning toward going ahead and letting her watch the movie, and my wife and I will discuss it tonight. The parents guide is excellent and I really didn't know what to expect other than all the media making a big deal cause its a PG-13 movie. After reading the guide, it's not even close to some of the movies that's she's seen (Jurassic Park 1-3 came to mind). I do have a concern over one scene, but a little conversation after the movie should be enough.

I think you're getting me confused with someone else, hahaha.. I've always been a "blame the kid" type of person. I hate when people need to find someone to blame, so they either blame the parents or the movies instead of realizing that maybe the kid had a screw loose. Kids have been watching movies with guns and whatever for decades, and it wasn't a problem until recently... so if a kid copies what he sees from Star Wars and cuts someone's head off, the kid has probs.

Anyway, like I said, the movie is PG-13. It's made up sci-fi. Kids learn more "bad things" in a day at school than they ever will from watching Star Wars movies.

My brother is 8 and I'd easily say this is okay for him. It's not bad at all. Then again, I'd let him watch a good ol classic like Night of the Living Dead, so you might not wanna listen to me

Well, we're back from seeing it.

The kid killing scene is not shown but strongly implied.

My 9 year old and 11 year old were most disturbed when Anikin/Darth Vader was burning in the lava field.

But they were fine.

We do take time before and after such movies to tell them that it is all make believe, actors and makeup and that no one is really being hurt.

Oh, and I think the scenes from Jurassic Park, especially when the T-Rex bites the lawyer in half, were more gruesome.

Also, some of it could be used to instill fear within your kids... so it might be a good idea to take them, afterall. Spoiler: You could tell them that if they act up or get out of control, that Darth Vader will come after them. They'll get the hint, as kids don't like the thought of being chased by any type of weird guy with charred skin and a scary mask.

I reckon it would be OK.....

I went to a 6pm Friday showing of the movie, and the theatre was PACKED with kids that age (unlucky for me.. they had trouble staying captivated during the full 2 hrs).. I think there was even a couple birthday parties there. They all seemed to handle it OK (of course I didn't actually go up and ask any of them hehe).

i would have to whol heartedly agree with this statement, as long as they arent homeschooled- by 11 youve been through sex ed, know and most likely have used swear words and seen violence all over the tv or at friends house.

You guys rock!

Looks like we will go tomorrow to see it, buddy of mine went and said there was a after-school field trip of 5th graders there, he knows this cause he sat next to the teacher, and then promptly moved back a few rows.. The more I hear the less I'm concerned, I just had no clue what to expect, but it sounds like a tame PG-13 (more for marketing reasons)...
