South Park said shit
Ok. I just saw the episode of South Park where they said the word "shit" 162 times. I was stunned so i did a little search on Google on how they were able to get away with this. Apparently this episode first aired in 2001. Where the hell was I? I did not know that "shit" was allowed on television. Why haven't I heard it on tv since? Has it been said but I did not notice? Can somebody shed a little light on this subject for me?

It's on cable and comes on late at night, that's how they got away with it.

I believe they massaged the censors and they pleaded with them, so the censors said "Ok, we'll let you say shit in one show." Watches the flood gates open

Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |

cable companies are allowed to pretty much air anything that they want i think. its up to advertisers to decide whether or not they are going to run ads during shows. many pull out when shows become potentially too racy, sexual, or vulgar. i dont think that cable companies are subject to the same censors that network television is subject to, thats why you see shows like the Shield getting away with nudity (they had an episode with a while bunch of backside nudity going on at the end.)
i think as long as a show has the support of its advertisors, then they are allowed to go on with pretty much anything that they'd like. BTW, Comedy Central has also aired the Southpark Movie a number of times, completely uncut, unedited, and unbleeped. now imagine that. |

FCC rules on obscenity, profanity, and indecency. Generally things are relaxed after 10 PM, but South Park reruns at 930 some nights and I guess nobody really cares that much.

and in the "Fun With Weapons" episode they clearly showed cartmans penis, and around the 5th or sixth season when ms. chokesondick, was first hired they blatently showed her boobs as well. They get away with a lot on that show, and I keep coming back for more. |

Southpark does some really bad shit, all the time, and gets away with it. Why? Because it is sooo over the top that its absurd.

The FCC does not monitor cable networks, only the airwaves (radio, basic TV). As previously stated, the advertisers are the censors. They won't want to sponsor shows that have certain stuff but SP has apparantly found sponsors that don't give a crap.

American TV seem really OTT about swearing.
As long as its after 9pm, you can say pretty much whatever the hell you want on British TV.
