South Park said shit

Ok. I just saw the episode of South Park where they said the word "shit" 162 times. I was stunned so i did a little search on Google on how they were able to get away with this. Apparently this episode first aired in 2001. Where the hell was I? I did not know that "shit" was allowed on television. Why haven't I heard it on tv since? Has it been said but I did not notice? Can somebody shed a little light on this subject for me?

It's on cable and comes on late at night, that's how they got away with it.

I believe they massaged the censors and they pleaded with them, so the censors said "Ok, we'll let you say shit in one show." Watches the flood gates open

Actually, I saw it tonight at 9:30.

One thing I learned from that episode..curse words are really "cursed."

cable companies are allowed to pretty much air anything that they want i think. its up to advertisers to decide whether or not they are going to run ads during shows. many pull out when shows become potentially too racy, sexual, or vulgar. i dont think that cable companies are subject to the same censors that network television is subject to, thats why you see shows like the Shield getting away with nudity (they had an episode with a while bunch of backside nudity going on at the end.)

i think as long as a show has the support of its advertisors, then they are allowed to go on with pretty much anything that they'd like. BTW, Comedy Central has also aired the Southpark Movie a number of times, completely uncut, unedited, and unbleeped. now imagine that.

FCC rules on obscenity, profanity, and indecency. Generally things are relaxed after 10 PM, but South Park reruns at 930 some nights and I guess nobody really cares that much.

Nobody should care that much, unless it bothers them personally...and if it does they should just turn it off...I don't wan't the government [or anyone else] babysitting me or my kids. Put it on and let the each person decide for themselves if it bothers them and handle it themself.

They also show South Park the movie at 11:00 in my time zone, in which they say 'fuck' hundreds of times uncensored.

plus showed the animated boobies, and saddams dildo in the bed

and in the "Fun With Weapons" episode they clearly showed cartmans penis, and around the 5th or sixth season when ms. chokesondick, was first hired they blatently showed her boobs as well. They get away with a lot on that show, and I keep coming back for more.

Southpark does some really bad shit, all the time, and gets away with it. Why? Because it is sooo over the top that its absurd.

none the less, its my FAVORITE show. I just cant get enough.

Redjake 04-21-2004 03:09 PM

law & order (or one of those shows) says shit on a regular basis......on just regular television. forgot which show it was.

tkkfan 04-21-2004 03:14 PM

kinda like inflation. Keep saying it and soon it will mean nothing

soccerchamp76 04-21-2004 05:11 PM

The FCC does not monitor cable networks, only the airwaves (radio, basic TV). As previously stated, the advertisers are the censors. They won't want to sponsor shows that have certain stuff but SP has apparantly found sponsors that don't give a crap.

CABLE, SATELLITE TELEVISION NEXT ON INDECENCY CRUSADE

"Cable and satellite television providers can expect Congress to try and impose decency standards on their programming if they fail to adopt
voluntary standards, Rep. Joe Barton, chairman of the powerful House Commerce Committee, said on Monday," Reuters reports
(http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...ncy_cable_dc_1).

"The Texas Republican told a conference of local television broadcasters -- already subject to tougher scrutiny than their pay television rivals --
that cable and satellite providers would have some time to adopt voluntary standards."

In "Should Government Censor Speech on Cable and Satellite TV?" (http://www.cato.org/tech/tk/040329-tk.html) Adam Thierer, director of
telecommunications policy, writes: "Congress doesn't have the right to censor pay TV, thanks to the First Amendment and America's strong tradition of
freedom of speech and expression. Lawmakers have never been able to censor supposedly 'indecent' material in newspapers, magazines, books, cable,
satellite, or the Internet the same way they have broadcast television. Courts will simply have none of it."

American TV seem really OTT about swearing.
As long as its after 9pm, you can say pretty much whatever the hell you want on British TV.

Spartak 04-22-2004 03:15 AM

Shit... (ha ha ha ha) .... *shrugs shoulders* ... shit shit shit ... (ha ha ha, golf clap).... shit.

Funniest episode for a long time, imo.
