CABLE, SATELLITE TELEVISION NEXT ON INDECENCY CRUSADE

"Cable and satellite television providers can expect Congress to try and impose decency standards on their programming if they fail to adopt
voluntary standards, Rep. Joe Barton, chairman of the powerful House Commerce Committee, said on Monday," Reuters reports
(http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...ncy_cable_dc_1).

"The Texas Republican told a conference of local television broadcasters -- already subject to tougher scrutiny than their pay television rivals --
that cable and satellite providers would have some time to adopt voluntary standards."

In "Should Government Censor Speech on Cable and Satellite TV?" (http://www.cato.org/tech/tk/040329-tk.html) Adam Thierer, director of
telecommunications policy, writes: "Congress doesn't have the right to censor pay TV, thanks to the First Amendment and America's strong tradition of
freedom of speech and expression. Lawmakers have never been able to censor supposedly 'indecent' material in newspapers, magazines, books, cable,
satellite, or the Internet the same way they have broadcast television. Courts will simply have none of it."
