Rules of Attraction
I watched the movie last night and thought it was great but I don't really understand the characters. From what I understand Sean Bateman is a drug dealer who wants true love but can't find it so when he gets those cards in the mail he thinks he found it but gets the person whos writing them wrong. Paul is a homosexual who noone likes, he wants to have a relationship with sean but sean doesnt want to have a relationship with him. Laren is a virgin whos obsessed over victor but victor isnt interested in her...Could someone please try and explain the characters to me and the whole premise of the movie?

Premise: Angsty teenagers go to college and turn into slightly hipper, more verbose angsty college 20-somethings. The movie tries to dramatise the darker side of college life for resident students. I don't think it goes any deeper than that, but young people in college can probably relate to at least one of the characters as a suped-up version of themselves.
Or, if you will, it's a dark "Saved by the Bell: The College Years". Or if you don't remember that show, a dark "Dawnson's Creek... The College Years". This way they can have more drugs and sex without pissing off the WB! Don't read too deep into this movie. |

very funny film.
one of my favourites. csflim said it; superficiality it the key here. i'm lead to believe that Easten Ellis has said that this is the only film interpretation of one of his novels that he really appreciates. btw, i think its fucking great that they cast Eric Stoltz as the dirty old professor... i mean the guy who played 'stoner #2' in Fast Times, turns out to be the debauched lecturer... love it.

Superficiality and indifference are definitely key elements of most if not all Ellis novels. This movie is a good interpretation of his novel, definitely way better than the crap movie Less than Zero in the 80s. That movie has almost nothing to do with the book except for the characters and a few key plot elements.
If you liked the film, check out the book, you'll like it more, it has the same chaotic feel to it as there are no chapters, just a changing perspective of events broken up into sections by character. "Fuck you very much!" |

The Rules is Ellis favorite novel that he has written - it's his most sentimental and you see characters reappear the most from this book in his other works; this is also the only film adaptation he was a part of in the production process. And the version we get to see is missing an hour of footage thanks to censors.
Ellis novels are devoid of 'depth' in the general literary sense - you can analyze them and find many things but he doesn't make use of plot (except in Glamorama) or symbolism or allegory or any other usual literary device - everything is laid out for you for instant gratification so you can see the utter indifference, apathy, arrogance, and narcicism of society from each end of the world in various social circles. |

I also love how the "pure innocent virgin" character gives head to her professor for better grades. That was a touch of genius!
