The Rules is Ellis favorite novel that he has written - it's his most sentimental and you see characters reappear the most from this book in his other works; this is also the only film adaptation he was a part of in the production process. And the version we get to see is missing an hour of footage thanks to censors.
Ellis novels are devoid of 'depth' in the general literary sense - you can analyze them and find many things but he doesn't make use of plot (except in Glamorama) or symbolism or allegory or any other usual literary device - everything is laid out for you for instant gratification so you can see the utter indifference, apathy, arrogance, and narcicism of society from each end of the world in various social circles.
