Superficiality and indifference are definitely key elements of most if not all Ellis novels. This movie is a good interpretation of his novel, definitely way better than the crap movie Less than Zero in the 80s. That movie has almost nothing to do with the book except for the characters and a few key plot elements.
If you liked the film, check out the book, you'll like it more, it has the same chaotic feel to it as there are no chapters, just a changing perspective of events broken up into sections by character.
