No Country for Old Men -- ktspktsp liked it more than I did. I just didn't get the point, especially the ending. Some excellent scenes and character building, but I didn't see what is was building up to, so left the theater a bit frustrated.

Overall, barely 7/10.

The Funeral - Chris Penn is so phenomenal in this overdone wannabe-Godfather story. The writing is so over-the-top but manages to really showcase the talent of the fabulous cast. For some outstanding performances, I'll call it a 7.5.

A solid action movie that gets you interested in the characters just enough to care. Great car chase scenes. Great characters. A couple memorable lines from DeNiro. Its entertainment.

The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys - 8/10
Just re-watched this film recently. It's an excellent 'coming of age'-type movie about a group of boys in the '70s trying to make a go of healthy rebellion with booze, mountain lions and comic books. Things don't go as well as they could. Jodie Foster gives a nicely understated performance as an oppressive, yet vulnerable nun and Vincent D'Onofrio the smoking, noncommital parish priest.

Eastern Promises 7/10
I dunno. Didn't think much of this film. Cronenberg hit his peak with Dead Ringers, I suspect. And, sorry, but I just don't think Viggo Mortensen is that great of an actor. I sat through this film thinking, 'look, it's Viggo Mortensen talking like a Russian guy.' Even his movements seemed overly studied and purposeful. Eh, I just didn't buy it. But I do give him props for that bath house fight scene. Not too many actors would brave that one.
*edit* Oh! But I wanted to mention how much I liked seeing Vincent Cassel in this film and enjoyed his excellent performance as Kirill.

Capote 10/10
I thoroughly enjoyed this film and it was not at all what I was expecting. Which is a good thing. Phillip Seymour Hoffman deserved his nomination. Don't remember if he won or not...but who cares. It was an excellent film all around.

Started watching Into the Wild last night and have The Darjeeling Limited sitting in line next to watch...I've been waiting for both of these for a long time. So far, I am enjoying Into the Wild very, very much. I am further impressed with Mr. Sean Penn. And the young man playing 'Alexander Supertramp' is excellent...don't know who he is.

It was funny. It was touching. I cared about the characters. The acting was great. I even shed a tear at Bianca's "funeral". Excellent movie all around.

This movie in no way deserved all of the hype. Just about all 6.5 of those points go to the movie's villain who did an excellent job, but that's about where it ends. Slow paced, boring ending, big disappointment.

Never Back Down. 6.8/10
I wasn't expecting to like this movie. Maybe it's just too many teen movies combined with WAY too many JCVD movies, but I've found myself becoming numb to the average mindless fight or teen drama film. The only reason I went is because Djimon Hounsou (Amistad, Gladiator, Blood Diamond) was in it and he's one of my favorite actors. I will admit that I was worried that Never Back down would be to Djimon Honsou what The Avengers was to Sean Connery.

It wasn't bad at all. While the characters weren't exactly original, they weren't cookie-cutter One Tree Hill types at all. I'd liken them more to a Friday Night Lights type, which is actually a bit refreshing. The story isn't amazing, but it's not bad either, and it's well executed. There are also twists put in, shifting the status quoe. The fight choreography isn't horrible, but it's not exactly realistic. Still, I don't really expect truly realistic fighting in most movies because it appears awkward and has an inconsistent pace.

All-in-all, it's not a bad movie.

I went way back in time to 1935 to check out this musical with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. I was expecting this black and white film to be rather boring, but I was wrong, this movie was funny and the acting was pretty good. Ginger Rogers is beautiful in this film!

You should see this movie if you are a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers fan or if you like musicals or if you like watching black/white films.

You should check out Swingtime (esp.!) and Flying Down to Rio , as well. Those are my favorite Astaire/Rogers films.

I pretty much agree. I give it a half a nod for being a watchable video gamw/movie adaptation. I haven't played the gamw, so I don't know if it was true or not. However, it seemed like one of those films where they just made a genre flick, and slapped a coat of franchise paint on it.

As for the lead, I didn't think he was nowhere near dark and cold enough. I think Jason Statham or Vin Diesel would've been better in the role.

As for the female lead, at least she was smokin hot, and not afraid to get nekkid.

A solid movie, considering I've always found Adam's tv personality to be a bit stiff. It's full of Adam-esque rants and social commentary, so fans of Adam will no doubt love the movie. It can get kinda formulaic, but not to the point of being trite and stale. I was really impressed to see him hitting focus pads and skipping rope so well! The rest of the cast is pretty solid, with a very charismatic foil in Harold's "Robert," and Adam's Nicaraguan buddy Ozzy. It's part love story, part buddy movie, part "underachiever achieving" (kinda like Cinderalla Man but with a schlub from the Valley). If it happens to play near you, I'd definitely recommend seeing it.

Zzyzx 4/10 B-movie rating 9/10
B-movie greatness. Didn't fall into most traps of B-horror movies. Great desert background. Also, a tribute to Clockwork Orange worked into it. Exceeded my expectations, but those were pretty low. A decent way to waste an hour and a half on a warm evening.

Vantage Point - 4/10

Awful movie, don't bother with it. I don't usually figure out twists, I think the last time being when I saw Saw, but this one was not only painfully obvious, but lacked the smallest impact. Hell, The Village had a bigger bang than this turd. The only reason I don't give it a lower rating is because of a few good action pieces, and some good acting. I am so glad I got in for free to see this.

Hitman

I do not agree with the previous comments:
this movie is not boring. it might not be the best movie but you're not gonna fall asleep on it.

I have never played the game but i knew what it was. The movie seems to follow what i know of the game but it didn't feel enough like the main character was a bad ass assassin. he was pretty chill compared to "The transporter" character who is in the same type of story line.

Acting wasn't bad. but the rest is meh. I give it a 6 because i wasn't overly bored with it but i wouldn't recommend a rental. Watch it when it plays on cable or something like that.

Overall score: 6/10

Prom Night (1980) - 5/10

This little '80s, er, gem, isn't too bad, but as far as '80s slashers go it's definitely somewhere mid-pile. Very bland, okay story-wise. I give it thumbs up for three things: a very nice decapitation, Jamie Lee Curtis, and a very unfunny Leslie Nielsen.

I tend to not like older movies because the acting always seems fake and cheesy, but I really liked this one (even though some of the acting was fake and cheesy). The story was good, the characters were likable, and the Pearl Harbor scene was great given the limitations of the time. I'm glad I gave this one a chance.

I really didn't enjoy this, it was so all over the place. It felt like they were making a 3 hour movie and just cut random scenes out to make it all fit into 100min. I felt that it had no flow.

I really liked the ending in this, totally predictable, I called it about 40 min into the movie, but still liked it all the same. This movie was enjoyable and a hell of a lot better than I thought it would be.

Okay.

I just finished watching Inland Empire, David Lynch's latest mind-fuck. And I don't know quite what to say. I think it's too early to rate it. Suffice it to say, good or bad, it had a definite impact on my afternoon. No one, and I mean no modern filmmaker can build suspense like David Lynch. Even though I hadn't the faintest clue what was going on, I couldn't stop watching. I was mesmerized. The one thing I can say about it definitively is that it is the most beautifully photographed Lynch film to date. His use of light and color is so totally distinctive and luridly elegant. The camerawork was exquisite. His use of ambient sound - torturous. Give the man a dark hallway and an ominously low humming sound with scratchy undertones and he'll make you pee yourself with dread, lol.

Anyway, writing this is bringing me down a bit. Whew. I really got sucked in...maybe it's this cold - feeling a little woozy and under the weather. The movie's no Mulholland Drive, but I think it's safe to say that no one else could have made this movie successfully. And I think the old man did succeed.

When exactly did David Lynch get this old?

This is a good read about the film:

I really like this that he had to say about it:

Quote:
I think Lynch's newest head trip is probably best understood as not understood at all. Instead, it should just be experienced - a jolt of pure cinema full of revelations about the power of film, but only because of what it is rather than what it says. Closer on many levels to a gallery installation than a Friday night at the movies...
Whew, anyway, that doesn't happen everytime I sit down to watch a movie. I think I need about about six-eight episodes of Sex and the City to recover.

Oh, sheesh, and Laura Dern was excellent. A truly admirable performance from an old favorite.

The Mist (2007) - 9/10 - One of my favorite Stephen King short stories brought to the screen exactly as I imagined it. The CGI was pretty hooky, however the writers or director did remove elements of the story that were completely unnecessary to the intensity. The ending was one of those god-damn-it-all-to-hell moments. Definitely will watch it again.

Planet Terror (2007) - 5/10 - If taken for nothing more than comedic effect, it is great and grotesque. Once... maybe twice is enough. Watch with friends and get your popcorn buckets as helmets.

Sunshine (2007) - 3/10 - no need to watch the whole thing again. more opinions here.

I don't know the only term that comes to mind is "fuck." Just "fuck!"

A doc about the genocide in Durfur, Sudan. Jesus Christ! The shit human beings do to each other.

I'm going to walk down to the corner cantina and drink a cerveza, or ten, and see if really loud salsa music will help me forget what I just saw.

When I get back maybe I'll have a number for the rating.
