i'm in the process of animating a desk scene for school in which i will have all the normal desk essentials and a drawing pad laying on the desk, and the camera will circle around, and my personal logo that is drawn on a peice of the drawing paper will rise out of the paper and go from 2d to 3d. i started 2 days ago, and i have a bunch to do.run on sentences rock!

Wow that looks really good so far.
One suggestion: Try putting some character into the desk such as knots or maybe some scribbling.

maybe a bump map for the texture I've done a little max work, Looks really good. I'm messing around with bryce as well at the mo.. the texture editor is really powerful but a pain in the ass to use.. Make sure you post a link to the file when you're finished..
What processor ram and grafix card you got?

i'm not sure if its what you meant GoldenOuroboros, but your video card has zilch to do with render times for a renderer like max, or maya etc, cpu is #1 and then memory, video cards only come in during menu, creating tools and fast previews.
its a good image, the only things i'd say that gives it away is the object in the top right the base needs more faces, did you create it with a curved surface then split in polys ? its hard to tell with the low res image, the shadows seem low and the reflection in the cup doesnt seem quite right either, does the software have some sort of resolution granularity setting for the final scene ( not width*height but depth of the render itself) from the looks of the rendered image i'm guessing its a raytracer, maybe a hybrid raytracer/scanline with the radiosity i'm wondering what resolution it runs in, i'd have to say i think max or maya would probably render a better image, it'd be interesting to see a comparison. |

Yea, I fixed the object in the top right, i just had to change the fillet on it, and just to get the radiosity look, i just turned it on without messing with the settings, just to see what it looked like, and it took almost 4 hours to render at 2400 pixels by something, i don't remember, but i like the look the default settings gave.

i'm not talking about a fast preview or creation stage. as good as GPUs are they dont yet do raytracing , radiosity or scanline rendering yet, its unlikey they will since its not really required, its faked in games and stuff, because you don't need realistic, its all NPR stuff. You could create a high res scene and get the card to render it, but it'd miss a lot of important details, youd have to fake the lighting and shadowing etc. GPUs are very limited in what they can do, at least the domain they work in, its very specific. (anyway wrong place to discuss this, sorry for the offtopic) Last edited by charliex; 11-30-2003 at 07:54 PM.. |

i added my sketchbook in it with a logo i did, the perspective sort of screwed it up a little bit, but i fixed it and didn't have time to re-render..so here it is so far....i'll eventually be making a movie in the upcoming days with it...

Also gallopingwanker, you don't really need the image to be soo big? The maximum you'd probably need is the max size of your monitor resolution. Changing the size will vastly effect render time as well. Although, cool pics nevertheless Radiosity is an amazing thing as well. |

thanks, it is actually my personal logo, which a lot of people find odd, because i am a guy, but you can't limit yourself to the obvious, you need to think outside the box, and often times, you need to be mysterious...

stick a logo on the blade, it'll make it look more realistic, also maybe a more pronounced edge too., you might get a light reflection off of , it'll look sharp.
For realism this is what the blade sitting on my desk says X-Acto 11 USA |

making a torrent file is a good idea, but i don't know how many people use bittorrent..if i did make a bittorrent file how would i get it on this site? I imagine i would have to put it on charliex's web space, if he wants to allow it?

bittorrent basically is setup so everyone downloads from everyone else in pieces, so you have say 20% and someone else has a different 20% he gets it from you and you from him, etc. i think
it should be fine on the site i gave you though, its got enough bandwidth. i think its on multiple oc3s, in other words quite nippy! |

gallopingwanker - I am in awe... I did sign design and wet my feet in the 3d scene for about a year, but never was able to accomplish anything on this scale...
Absolutely superb work, the close up of the razor was fantastic, even if simple, the reflective surface you put it on finished the effect. If you need a co-host, I have server space available as well, especially for fine work as this. Plus, if I host it I can post the movie in this thread without a problem at all... |
