logo help

Hi, I'm working on a logo that i need to put in vectors. Right now it's a sketch in photoshop and I don't have illustrator so thats not an option. I found a site that said you could use the path tool so thats what I'm trying. Is there a way to scale ALL the layers at once? is there a way to make some lines that are vector? right now I'm only able to make shapes and I would like to have just lines or curved lines.

Once i get something worth showing, I'll post something for comments and criticism.

If Photoshop is not the best option, is there anything else i COULD use?
i'm looking for a format that works in more than 1 software and right now, photoshop seems to limit me to AI for illustrator and psd.

allright, i started using INKSCAPE for this project. i don't know how anyone can use ADOBE products for vectoring. in photoshop, it's long and not idea, and in AI, it was fucking retarded. for anyone on this board who's paying for AI, give inkscape a look. it's opensource. you might be suprised!

I have been using Illustrator both as a student and professionally for over 10 years. Yeah, the basics of the pen tool do seem rather stupid at first, but with practice, the sky is the limit.

I highly reccomend getting Illustrator and learing the pen tool. It may be cumbersome and tedious at first, but in the end you'll be glad you did it. I have a gallery on deviant art, most of which is 100% vector art, drawn with a mouse not a drawing pad, and colored in AI as well. Check it out... http://mister-jp.deviantart.com/gallery/

I'd like to see the progress so far. Also, if the design isn't over the top, I'd be willing to draw it in Illustrator for you, free of charge as a friendly TFP gesture.

Yea, that Chrylser woodie of yours started my spiral into the Illustrator abyss
(working on my 4th motorcycle-a 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic). Now that I have the Wacom tablet, the pen tool is like making rapid-fire dots.

Mister Coaster: thanks for the offer. but the logo was made for a client who wanted vector specifically. But it's not a problem now, i made it in Inkscape so it's all good. has anyone ever tried it? what i hate about AI is that if i want to modify a layer, i have to select it 1st. in inkscape, i just have to click what i want to modify and voila! it's there. eitherway, i was able to finish in 1 day what would have taken me a few days in AI. (it was more than 1 little logo... i had 9 version to create so it all worked out.)

I might post it later when i start my next project.

Not that it matters since you are done, But in AI if you click any object using the selection tool, the active layer is automaticically switch to the layer that that object is in, and the object is selected. Also, no matter what tool you are currently using, if you hold the control key down, and the current tool, become the selection tool.

that does NOT work for my copy of AI CS. it was a fucking mess to edit anything. anyways, i'll only use it if I get a job that requires it. for now, Inkscape is extremely good for what i'm creating.

I use Flash to vectorize stuff. Its a whole lot easier than AI, to me.

absolutely! i agree with you man. I was going to use flash but for this project, I wanted to keep it in a format that AI could read for the guy who was printing it.
since Adobe bought macromedia, i wonder if they'll start using the qualities of flash in AI/photoshop or if they'll just destroy those tools?

Now to get back on topic of ART: I'm creating a new logo for the same person. it has to do with eco-tourism and restaurant/hotel stuff. (i don't know the proper terms in english...)

up to now all my tests have been horrible. Like I tried putting someone fishing, in a canoe, or anything like that but it just looks like a sports company. and then anyother ideas with the restaurant/hotel made it look too busy for the logo. i'm having a hard time combining them together.

does anyone have any ideas on something that could incorporate the 2 ideas?

A picture of a guy dining on an endangered species? Hmmm... maybe not. A logo does not have to encompass everything about the company. Look at the logos for Apple, Hertz, Ford, Pepsi, etc. See what you can do with a bit of type and some color.

OR.... how about this. You know those international symbol signs you see in airports and whatnot. No words, but you know what they mean. Do something in that style. Make it look like an informational sign, and the pictuer is a leaf with a fork shape in negative space inside the leaf.

```````````````
Seaking of logos and vectors. I made a logo in PS by scanning a sketch and coloring it in. It is a photoshop file now. Can I save it as vector art, or do I need to start over? Here is a jpg of the rough draft -
i know what you mean, ok cool. i'll try a few tests like this but i still want it to be recognizable.
that was my 1st idea of making it a symbol. but aparently they seem to want colours so i'm looking for something a bit more 3d. less 2d-black.
ok, if you did it in photoshop, it's not vector. unless you used the pen tool and even then, it still sucks. i used your picture in INKSCAPE and in 10sec, i had a vectorized image. (it's an automatic process.with a ton of option.) see attachment. 1st = plain black, 2nd = i changed the fill to a gradient with a black border. and 3rd shows the control points that makes it a vector image.
cool eh?
no problem man! i think maybe some other softwares might do this but INKscape is free and it works so well! you'll just have to get used to the interface. (it's slightly different than photoshop but not by much.)
OK, I feel the need to chime in. Although those "auto-trace" options in Inkscape and Illustrator are pretty good, its still just a machine making decisions rather than a human. Also, looking at where it placed the nodes, it is not efficent. I took the liberty of doing one myself, it took 5 minutes. OK, that's longer than 10 seconds, but there are far less nodes (control points) and all of the spines, teeth and claws are pointed, not rounded off.
Doing it yourself rather than letting a machine make the decisions will always come out better, IMO.
eh, i know mine wasn't perfect but like i said: 10sec. using the same technique, i could just refine the lines and control points till i get what i want and i'm sure it would take less than 10mins. also, the reason the teeth are so rounded in the one i did is because the outline is thick while the drawing is too small.
but atleast now you know what inkscape can do.
