Movie! i need your input
yep, i'm going to produce a movie
all i know is that i want to produce one for a film festival in the spring.... i got a dvd camcorder, access to the proper computer software, the only thing i dont have is an idea of what to do for the movie?? anyone have any good ideas for a new movie?? you might earn yourself a place in my credit reel for locations, i have access to my college campus, big city, small towns with main streets, small lakes, rivers, woods, creeks, suburbs.... basically i'm good enough located and mobile enough to do the locations.... even a small blue screen (will construct larger one within the year) for actors, i dont think i'll have a problem, i have some theatrical major contacts and musicians i can get ahold of.... it's for a small film festival, soo huge length isn't needed, i'm looking for 15 mins to an hour? it depends on what type of story i can get.... now what i need from you guys are some ideas for the movie, like script ideas, theme, plot lines, etc.... tell me the movie of your dreams, what would be a perfect movie?

Most good stories involve choice and loss. I personally think that stories with impossible choices a la Antigone are the best ones. Unforseen consequences are high on my list, too. Perhaps a story with a very unexpected ending? Think Gift of the Magi or The Necklace for this sort of inspiration and adapt to fit your interests. Making the story contemporary would add a nice twist to it...

If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty |

I think every movie should have a scene resembling this as follows:
Black screen as the opening credits play with music. Music ends abruptly as- RING of alarm clock. The screen cuts from stark black to bright white to show closeup of male face, shot from above to reveal his head is on pillow. At this instand the man's eyes shoot open. Man's eyes seem to relax for a second Close-up of man's nose sniffing something. Back to original close-up of man's face, to see a sence of urgency fill his eyes. He looks to his side and his eyes widen in shock. Camera rises from close-up to slowly reveal man is laying next to a (choose one, or any combination of two or more) a)hobo clown b)goose c)cardboard cutout of George Foreman d)mustachiod man wearing black leather chaps with no pants e)pile of his own body hair (man would be totally clean shaven for greatest effect) f)Ewok g)member of an 80's hair band, complete with massive hairsprayed hair h)Big Boy statue *edit- Sorry, probably too tired to make a post with any value. I DO like politicophiles suggestion. Last edited by anleja; 10-19-2005 at 10:27 PM.. |

How about the life and times of a guy. Just some random guy. It would be real artsy, and you would probably win.
Why make a movie if you don't have a concept of your own? Just to do it? I can respect that, but it won't be "Your movie" unless it comes from your heart. One thing I know for sure... audiences can tell if something has the passion of the people making it, and they can also see if someone is just 'phoning it in'. How about a post-apocalyptic piece where all technology is gone/all the oil is gone and your hero finds a survivor and they learn to live together, and deal with old social stereotypes and new realities? It could be humorous, it could be romantic, it could be action-packed... Anything you want to make it. Just go for realism when setting things up. don't cheap out and put everyone in rags and dirty faces. Research ancient cultures and their downfall; research survival techniques.

You know Documentaries are always a break through type of genre. Also horror films are easy to make first time movies. If you are trying to make an artsy piece of crap like "Lost in Tanslation" or "sideways" then you can't take my advice. Plot lines along the premise of sports reality are kind of cool, but you have to like sports. Most film students simply don't. Don't do comedy it never works the way it should. You need to develop deep characters. more than just how they interact with the movie but so deep that people want to know how they live their everyday life. You could do a sort about a kid who joins the Army out of college and goes through Iraq and coems back a differant person for better or for worse. More than likely you would want to portray it for worse. but your call. Look at sucessfull tv shows and see what makes them a sucess. you are basicly trying to take the time of a tv show and make it into a movie. try to work backwards. anyway all i know abotu movies is i like to watch them. Not too many movies out there that i don't like or find some entertainment value in. One thing that I don't think many people like is making a movie with a political agenda. then again you are catering to a vastly liberal audience so bush bashing may gain you some points. good luck and I am sure you will do fine.

Dude. Ideas are all around. Any damn thing.
That said, go here: http://www.b3ta.com/questions/ Read what you find there. If you can't find the idea for a dozen shorts, I'll be very surprised. |

i just got the requirement listings and now i see that my target time length is ten minutes
my idea is a documentary of someone's dream sequence, where theres someone who falls asleep and dreams of funky stuff... it will allow for random freaky artistic and amusing things, such as a hobo clouds or something else odd like anleja suggested, and i might take up florida0214's idea of politics and glorify bush and bash some democrats the ending will slowly fade and blink to black, with the sound of a alarm going off or something, adn teh person waking up
