Was 1.20/L this morning but is back down to 1.03 this afternoon... This just underscores for me that what was going on was gouging.

Let's face it. I can handle the price going up because of the disaster. It makes sense. BUT... The gas they have in the pumps right now was purchased at a lower rate.

They are just taking advantage of a bad situation... that *is* sick and cold.

It's only up .10 here in Corvallis. I'm really surprised. It's up to 2.67 (highest all summer) after hitting 2.63 two weeks ago and dropping to 2.57 early last week. I thought for sure the price would have jumped more by now. But then we are close to all the West Coast refineries

Just bought some at 2.69. Actually, we bought it for 2.79 because I couldn't find the 2.69 pump and people were honking.

It is nice living blocks away from the cheapest station in town.

No doubt. This morning it was $2.68, when I came home about an hour ago, the gas station up the road was putting up $3.24.

It just seems a bit odd that every gas station in town has a different price and it seems to be changing at random times during the day. I know a few months after 9/11 about a dozen different gas stations around here got into some trouble for price gouging, so, this little flare up doesn't surprise me one bit.

Not much impact here in California, up roughly 5-8 cents since Saturday. But, as someone else alluded to, we have the west coast refineries close by.

I read an article which stated that Internet rumors have helped fuel the run on gas in the south, such as a rumor about State Troopers closing all gas stations at a certain time. I think the lines only help drive up the crazy demand and are actually inflating the prices more than the should be.

EDIT: I guess I didn't pay as much attention today to this prices, I checked one of the gas price websites, and the average here in Orange County is up to $2.88, from $2.81 yesterday and $2.75 last week. The national average is $2.86, and I can tell you that I can not remember the national average being even within 30 cents of the California averages. With the heavier California gas taxes and generally higher cost for the cleaner gasolines we use here, you can say California now may have some of the cheapest gas in the country. Little consolation though, in light of the events of the last few days.

I am in Salt Lake City and just filled up the night of the hurricane @ 2.39/gal. I have only used about a quarter tank in my Pont Sunfire since then and refueled tonight @ 2.69/gal. So it has shot up about 30 cents here in just 3 days. I was hoping we would see gas here drop down to about 2.00/gal sometime in the future because it was slowly dropping, but now who knows if we will see the 2.50/gal price again.

You're right. It is sick and cold. It's not like there are better things to do with the saved money....like, oh, I don't know, donate to help thousands of people recover from a terrible disaster. It's much better to spend the money on gas instead.

Anyway, I saw it at 2.99 last night and the station was PACKED with people filling up.

Sick....and ice cold.
I usually wait until i'm low and then fill up my tank completely. I usually tank about 11.7 gallons.

Gas here shot up $0.30, to $3/gallon in the last 2 days. All reports point towards that going up to $4/gallon. That's a total difference, just because of this event, of $1.30. THAT'S INSANE.

Also, the difference in price means that, with the extra $1.30/gallon, it will cost an additional $15.21. That is a lot of extra money that, as SecretMethod70 pointed out, has many, many better uses than going towards gas.

So, yeah, I'm pissed gas prices are skyrocketing. I'm also sad that so many people's lives are fuxored. But you know what else? Most gas stations in the area were OUT OF GAS...

In central florida, the shortage is so bad that they're expecting to have to suspend school bus service after labor day (the 5th) until the supply of diesel is restored. This will horribly inconvenience everyone with kids- and also those who have to drive around with all those extra cars on the road. This will make for mad drivers, and more drivers, which will increase accidents. They are reporting having to shut down airports because of lack of jet fuel and other fuels needed to run things.

By the way... not for nothing, but I searched and didn't see a single post- not one- in all of the very many threads about the tsunamis that hit over in Asia from you. You were active in the forums they were in, but didn't post once in any of the tsunami threads. I'm not saying that because you chose to post in practically all the hurricane threads that you had to post in the tsunami threads... but a shitload more people's lives were ruined and taken away by that disaster than hurricane Katrina.

I'm just curious, and I bring it up, since apparently you're calling us all cold and sick. You know, since that's not a nice or fair thing to say, I figured I'd extend my curiosity on your total lack of voice for the tsunami victims and see why you didn't care about that.

It is so insane here its not funny. Yesterday was pay day....I get gas on payday...I COULD NOT get into any gas station along the 11 mile drive home....streets were backed up with people waiting to get to the pumps and I was almost on empty. SO many gas stations are now out of gas.

Fortunately the one next to my house had been replinished sometime over nite, so I got to pay 3.19 to fill my tank up. I got over by work and realized I needed to stop and get a Dr Pepper so I pulled into the BP station next to my office.....they were out of gas...the tanker truck was in the parking lot pumping...YAY the station would have gas...BUT people were in the fucking parking lot cussing out the tanker drivers cause it was taking so long....helloooo people, you can only pump that stuff so fast.

I grew up in a pipeline family, the two that run thru georgia over to texas are the ones that are down. I believe I heard this morning that one is up and running at 35% and they hope for 50% by the weekend....Im not sure which one though, my daddy worked for one, my grandfather the other one.

People...dont yell at the tanker drivers, and you stupid gas stations trying to charge so much (yes some stations here were charging over 5 dollars a gallon yesterday, but they were shut down) stop being so fucking greedy!!!!!!

Im scared at the rate drive offs are increasing...those people are going to cause some serious wrecks trying to get away.

I know that rant didnt make any sense...but geez Im just shocked at the behaviour of some people

edit* I found an article about this stuff here...which talks about both pipelines (my daddy worked for plantation, my grandaddy worked for Colonial)

Quote:
Perdue Works to Stem Price Gouging

Citing credible evidence of price gouging, Governor Sonny Perdue Wednesday afternoon signed an executive order authorizing state sanctions against gas retailers who gouge consumers.

Perdue said he does not believe there is an energy emergency and that the state will not tolerate citizens being fooled by exorbitant gas prices.

The order allows the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs to seek civil sanctions against retailers who can't justify their prices based on the price they paid for the product.

Perdue gave no specific examples of gouging -- but said he's heard reports of gas being raised from $3 a gallon to $5 or $6 a gallon just this afternoon.

Perdue warned retailers that the state has the ability to check the prices they are paying and plans to prosecute gougers to the full extent of the law.

"Frankly, when you prey upon the fears, the paranoia of citizens, it is akin to looting in a different sort of way," Perdue said.

"We should not even have to be doing this," he said. "I'm frankly embarrassed for our state and some of our businesses that we have to do this."

He acknowledged consumers may not always know if they are being gouged as gas prices change. "You just have to report this and our Office of Consumer Affairs will investigate," he said.

Complaints of price gouging can be sent to the state Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin at tirvin@agr.state.ga.us or visit the department's Web site at www.agr.state.ga.us .

Customers can also complain by calling (404) 651-8600 inside Atlanta or (1 800) 869-1123 outside Atlanta.

Governor Urges Calm
Earlier in the day, Gov. Sonny Perdue asked Georgians to remain calm over the rising price of gasoline, saying the state's major distributor should be operational by the weekend.

"There's no reason to panic. There's plenty of gas on the way and the only way we'll have problems locally is if we rush out and hoard," the governor said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference. "Stay calm and conserve, don't just run out to top off your tank. Just continue with normal fueling habits."

Despite Perdue's advice, Metro Atlantans spilled out of gas stations and onto busy roadways as they waited for their turn to fuel up.

Some said the fear was sparked by messages being sent over e-mail that prices were on their way up.

“We got an e-mail and that e-mail was saying that gas prices were going to go up a dollar extra,” said Bunmi Jinadu.

An e-mail message Tomeka Lambert received said that pumps would run out of gas by the end of the day.

Hurricane Katrina knocked out power to two pipelines – the Colonial Pipeline and the Plantation Pipeline -- that bring gas and jet fuel into the region. Electric pumps along the route move the gas from Louisiana to New York and Washington D.C.

The gas ends up at a tank farm in Doraville, Ga., where tanker trucks fill up and take the product to gas stations around the metro area.

Katrina knocked out power to all the pumps in Mississippi, bringing the operations to a halt.

The lines have been down for over two days.

"That does affect our gas supply and it's led to an increase in gas prices," the governor said of the pipeline problem. "This is a temporary problem due to Hurricane Katrina and will be resolved soon. It is not a cause for alarm or panic. It is not a long-term situation."

Both pipelines have restarted their operations without the pumps in Mississippi. The gas is moving, but at a much reduced capacity.

Colonial is planning to add generators to its pumping stations through the weekend, which should boost supply.

Gas retailers typically do not keep a big inventory on hand, usually as little as three to five days worth, and that limited supply droved prices upward today, leading to the panic at the pump.

Additionally, since gas is a commodity, companies will pay a lot more to get it when supply is limited, which raises the wholesale price, and consequently, the price at the pump.

"To further ease the supply problem, we have temporarily waived the fuel additive requirements to expand the supply of gasoline," he said. The EPA approved the request to waive the additive, which allows for more types of fuel to come into the metro area.

In Forsyth County, 11Alive Reporter Jennifer Leslie witnessed the price of a gallon of gas shoot up to $3.50 a gallon before dropping back to $3.09 just an hour later.

11Alive.Com found one station in Stockbridge selling gasoline for a $3.56 a gallon and another in Tyrone selling gas for $3.52.

At a gas station on Pleasant Hill Boulevard in Duluth, regular unleaded gas reach $3.99 a gallon.

Instead of adding to the lines at the pumps, Perdue suggested, "Why don't just relax and spend the time with your children?...we're going to get through this just fine."

He acknowledged that while higher gas prices are an inconvenience, Georgians should keep in mind the massive humanitarian disaster in Louisiana and Mississippi where thousands of people may be dead.

The Clean Air Campaign is using the gas crisis to ask drivers to sign up for its Commuter Rewards program that offers cash for drivers who switch to a clean commute. Those who use mass transit, telework, carpool, walk, or bike can earn $3 per day.

Huh. The news item in ShaniFaye's post just makes me think I contributed to the panicking! Which I may have... and if I did, I'm sorry.

Right now, the range is 2.85 to 3.09/gallon in the stations I've seen here in NYC. I can't believe they'd keep the prices up after the pipelines are functioning again... but I've been surprised before.

I just got off the phone with my daddy, and I thought I'd pass what he told me along, to anyone that might be interested.

Pipeline company lesson #1
Whats happening right now is that....the main staging area is in Baton Rouge and Pascagoola (sp?) MS...those staging areas require 6000 to 8000 hp motors to run the pipes. The pipes should not be damages as they lay 12 feet underground, BUT they run up hill from Baton Rouge to Bremen Ga (which is right at the alabama state line). They have no power, there are not many generators that can run a 6k-8k hp motor which is why they are only running a 35%. The line that runs from Bremen GA to Greensboro NC doesnt require power to pump the tanks because gravity does the work for them.

On a normal day they will pump around 800,000 barrells per day...each barrell is 42 gallons. Right now if they are running at 35% they are pumping 280,000 barrells which would be 11,760,000 gallons a day.

We arent running out of gas....its just taking time to get it here.

anyway, I thought that might be interesting to somebody

Thanks for sharing your info Shanifaye.

I have felt irritated that people could be so greedy. Hubby does have to drive about 30mi one way to work and back each day. I do not drive anywhere for work or even much during the week for groceries. So long as it isn't pouring rain or freezing cold I use my bicycle and bike trailer to take the kids places and even go to the grocery store. I am lucky to live in a smaller town where a leisurely bike across town from one end to the other only takes me about 45 min. We are using as little gas as possible.

What irritates me is that the gas stations are somewhat milking the 'threat' to our gas supply by hiking the price much more than is reasonable. I can understand some changes in price but from $2.72 to $3.23 in one night is outright greedy.

As for being concerned about those who've been hit by the storm - Complaining that we're more concerned about the money we spend on gas is not hurting them any. If the hike in gas price was to fund relief efforts I would be much more willing to spend the added dollars. For greed - I will do my upmost to avoid giving you any more money than my personal needs dictate.

$3.30 about 20 miles south of charlotte in SC, normally oen of the cheapest places i've seen to get gas, but that has changed...tremendously....

sad story, a house burned yesterday as the firetruck coming was blocked by lines for gas stations running into the street...the firetruck was literally stuck while in sight of the burning house...

Another sad story: my manager has a dodge durango, not the most efficient car by any means, and lives 45 miles away from work..and shares her car with her bf who drives another 30 miles to his workplace...75 miles for a one way trip to work, so 150 miles per day at an average of 18-20 mpg at $3/gallon.. so roughly $10/day for driving to and from work, which means she is working for roughly an hour pre-tax JUST to pay to come to work that day

another funny item: it is now cheaper for me to replace my battery than it is to fill my tank. it is also cheaper for an oil change with synthetic oil that my car uses: mobil 1 full synth is $5.30/quart so an oil change is ~$30 with filter.

anyone know what the highest gas price was during the 70's when adjusted for inflation?

I think they topped out at about $2.94, adjusted for inflation. It was actually 1980 when they hit that high. I've also heard numbers like $3.07 and $3.30, and 1981, too, but I don't know who is telling the truth.

I think it's pretty clear, we've made up for that inflation gap now.

Im sorry to threadjack a little but since I just heard on the news, unless you NEED to buy it now, dont buy gas just to save a dollar or two. I think workers and Gulf residence need it more now than we do.

Looks like Ill be bumming rides for a little bit now.

It's right over $3.00 adjusted for inflation in the early 80's.
