The best (most extreme) car-safety ad I have ever seen!!!
This I just saw in a New Zealand car magazine called 'Autocar'.
First you see the first picture, then you flip over the page, and see the second one. I was amazed. I didn't know if it was too extreme or not. I'm not sure... but I am just absolutely amazed! (If it rexes you might just have to right-click, and select show picture, should work.) http://www.angelfire.com/alt/arrh/1.jpg and then the second one... http://www.angelfire.com/alt/arrh/2.jpg edit: images turned to links. next time please warn before posting images of corpses... I never wear my seat belt but lately i've been thinking about starting as the state cops have been running a bunch of advertisements on TV about how they're cracking down on it. My father was one of the emergency rescue workers that responded to wrecks. He never wore his seat belt because he told me he saw a wreck where a guy couldn't get it undone and ended up burning to death in the car. I guess it kinda rubbed off on me. Anyone else never wear the seat belt?

i always wear my seat-belt. i actually just feel wrong driving without it. it feels too free. i cant really explain it. but somehow it just does not feel right to not wear it. plus, just a few months ago, my dad broke his back in the ivory coast. he was in the back of an suv on the highway going 120kmh, when a tire burst, and it flipped over almost 8 times. he was not wearing his seatbelt, he was in the back of the car. :s
(he's ok now though, very lucky. walking and everything again) |

*Anyone else never wear the seat belt?*
I didn't, until I started driving a convertible Mustang GT about 5 weeks ago. I had read stories over the years about people being trapped in burning cars by their safety belts, but my real distaste for belts is based on the fact that the belt is not designed for a girl who is built. The strap ends up crossing my neck. That can't be good in an accident. I'm wearing it tho' cause cripes, there's no top on my car! ARRH- those pics are brutal. Hopefully they'll be effective. Thanx for the post. Last edited by Double D; 05-18-2003 at 10:09 PM.. |

Well, I am a very lucky guy. When i was in 8th grade i never wore my seat belt. I was in a wreck that wasn't serious enough to do much damage to me (a 2nd degree burn under my chin), but it was serious enough to open my eyes. I feel naked without a seat belt now.

I hate wearing seatbelts when I am a passenger. Absolutely hate it. When I am driving though, I have to wear my seat belt, especially when I am driving my own car. My dad, and some of his friends have been in accidents where, if they had worn there seatbelts they would have been killed. But my dad also has friends that have been thrown hundreds of feet from their car.
Why did God invent seatbelts? So the paramedics wouldn't have to search for the bodies. My dads friend was thrown so far from the crash site, that the paramedics didn't find the body until hours after the initial crew came to the site. My dad's friend flew out of the convertible. Needless to say, if I am not driving, most likely I won't be wearing a seatbelt if the driver of the car doesn't make me put one on. Unless we pass the police. Most everywhere I go now has seatbelt laws, but now that I think about it, putting my seatbelt on after we pass the cop isn't going to do much good if we get pulled over...Anyway, now that I have completly said too much...I'm gonna go.

wow, that's crazy... no seat-belt?!? It's mandatory for transportation in any vehicle I am driving, that a seat-belt be worn. If you don't want to belt up, you can walk. I'm not gonna have you fly out MY windshield, thanks. I'd rather get a bruise across the neck (yeah, I have that same big-boob prob), then to put my skull through the steering wheel. *shudder*

My parents owned a Volvo when I was young. I'd read that it crash tested very well and injuries would be minor if you were belted in. I thought it be such a waste to not wear the belt and started to after that. Now, I hate not wearing one. Years later I had a relatively minor accident that would have hurt a lot more had I not been wearing the seat belt.

I never used to wear mine until in High School this girl I know was hurt bad in an accident and she would have been fine if she had only been wearing one. So from that point on I've worn one.

After I posted above I realized that this thread turned into a Do I wear a set-belt thread. About the ad itself: Personally, I don't want to look at bodies. I suppose for some it may be an effective means to promote seat-belt use. I suppose for most non-belt wearers this or less shocking methods isn't going to make any difference.
Frankly there are certian risks I take in life. I'd argue they aren't as stupid as not wearing a seat belt. I know the dangers involved and I'd just don't necessarily want to be hit over the head with stuff like this. |

That picture is like something you'd see at rotten.com. Im amazed how that got into a New Zealand magazine, considering they have the same sort of censorship laws as Australia, and they are pretty strict when it come to that sort of stuff. They must have become lax due to the high road toll this year, and its only May!
As for wearing a seatbelt: Im not sure about other countries, but here in WA, its THE LAW! No seatbelt = AUD$150 and 3 Demerit points (of a possible 12 Demerit points).

I always wear my seat belt. Didn't use to but once when I was 7 mo pregnant got into a 45 Mph crash head on with a guardrail overlooking a ravine. Still hit my head on the edge of the roof above the windshield. Sprained my wrist too. Cops and eye witnesses said that if I hadn't been belted in I'd have more than likely shot through the window. I had a sore shoulder from the belt but because I was wearing it properly I didn't have any trouble with the pregnancy. My daughter was born 2 months later perfectly healthy and 8.5 lbs. When someone elses life is in your hands a close call wakes you up even more than when you are on your own. I will always wear a belt. I've seen more than one person thrown from a vehicle - none of them survived.

I always wear my seatbelt.
However, there should be zero seatbelt laws/fines. I'll take care of protecting myself without the government's authority.

I don't think the ad is too much. Actually, I sorta expected worse...maybe someone halfway through a windshield.
In this day of visual extreme, why is honest gore with a message so appalling? I've heard the arguments about being stuck belted into a wreck, but what are the stats on such deaths, versus those that die from being thrown 'free?' I'll take my chances with the belt, thank you. |

Wow. That's effective. I just stole the links and posted them on another board and it's blowing up! Seatbelts have saved my life twice at least so I feel the need for many to see this.

My car has automatic seatbelts, but I really started wearing them on a regular basis when I saw a state patrol exibit that takes a car shell and uses a machine to roll it over a couple of times, while the dummies roo around and fly out. Pretty impressive.

That picture was bad, but this one from a Texas anti-drunk-driving campaign is worse. Warning: non-bloody, but graphic. To me, it has even more shock value than the corpse photo. http://www.orsm.net/images/drinkdrive.jpg |

MrSelfDestruct, seeing that image makes me want to cry. I agree that photo has major shock value.
I think these types of ads really hit home for a lot of folks. It makes the consequences seem more visceral and real, somehow.

I always wear a seatbelt... in a car like mine (a Mini), you'd have to be a complete idiot not to.
I have seatbelt cutters in my center console always, as long as one of those special claw hammers for smashing through windows. I always check that they're there before I drive... and I always tell anyone I'm carrying to put theirs on before we go. If I didn't wear a belt, though, that would scare me into it.

I have worn my seatbelt ever since my grandmother was killed in an accident. All of the other people walked away with a few cuts and bruises because they had their seatbelts on. She didn't wear hers because it "wrinkled her clothes". Hell of a way to learn a lesson, but now everyone in my family wears seatbelts now, even my parents.

The chance of you getting stuck in your car that's on fire is quite remote in comparacence to your corpse being scraped off the other car. If you worry about that then you could buy a two dollar line cutter from your local boatshop and be able to cut yourself free with two broken arms.
Anyway, back to this ad. I think it's good that people know tha consequenses of their actions but this is defenently not billboard material, kids should be shielded from it until they are old enough to handle it like 14y+, until then it's up to the driver to make sure thay are buckled up. And seing this kind of shit should be mandatory when getting a license. Not that I cared when I first got mine, I drove like hell but after a few years I realized that what I gained in time/experiense wasn't enough compared to the risks I took. If I want a speed kick now I'll skydive or something like that. I always wear a seatbelt, I feel unsafe if I take it off to remove my jacket.

That ad is a little too extreme... I've noticed recently that the road safety advertisements on tv seem to be LESS graphic than they used to be, guess they got a few complaints. I can understand them being blunt, but that is just over the top... people need to be educated about road safety but they don't need nightmares.

My mother is extremely sensitive to grafic material. She won't watch any movie more than PG. I am certain that when I show her this ad that she won't think poorly of it. I believe she would appreciate the boldness of the message. I agree - it's not necessarily for kids. I believe it was said that it was originally in a magazine. Probably in a magazine a child wouldn't be reading it until they are old enough to handle it anyway. For the adults reading it I think it's appropriate. I was only a kid and it is burned into my memory a scene I saw when we stopped beside a highway. There happened to be a wreck just about even with us and we watched as it occured. As far I could tell then it was only because the car went off the side of the road. As they tried to pull it back on the tires caught on the lip and started the car in a sideways slide. As the wreck continued I watched the hatchback roll and then flip end for end. I have the picture in my head of someones upper body being flung out the windows (it was sumemrtime) and then the car coming down on that side. I watched as the person was folded in half and the crushed underneath the car. Since then I have always worn my belt. I read in the paper afterwards that one of the 4 people in the car was belted - He was the ONLY one to survive. I don't remember that scene as a scar on my psyche. It's a reminder of the value of belts.
