XM Radio Launches 24/7 Emergency Info Channel
Hi,
Xm Radio has launched a new service on channel 247, coincidentally, called the 24/7 Emergency Information Channel. It is currently broadcasting information about Hurricane Ivan. Pretty cool when you consider that some people may not have any stations operating near them as Ivan distrupts power to homes and transmitting sites and or damages transmitting antennas.

You know I really wish xm radio was free with am and fm radio because xm actually sounds like good radio. What is the cost like for xm radio, I might have to consider shelling out the cash for it.

Personally, I think it is worth it. I have three XMPCRs (two in use and a spare) and I have a "Roady 2" on the way. My next car will have an XM, too.
The receivers are more expensive, but I'm no longer chained to clear channel clones for rock music. I have been listening to _music_, not to egotistical asshat DJ's. I can listen to news from BBC (They report, they don't editorialize like US newcasters), and I have news from all the major networks. IMHO, broadcast radio is a rotting corpse. I don't mind paying for the service. Music-wise, they are providing exactly what I want, not what some advertiser thinks I should hear. So much for Arbitron bragging rights. Also, a quick check of Froogle shows that you can find radios for $80. If you check XM Fan sites, you can find them cheaper.

The only advertisements on XM are the ones carried by the third-party content providers (msnbc, cnn, etc.). Some of the channels with DJs will occasionally plug something on XM channel (their own channel or another channel). The Decades channels (50's, 60's, etc.) play a vintage commercial every so often.
Legolas, you need to define "consumer friendly." I find that my XMPCR with XtremePCR is as friendly as it gets short of having some hot babe pop out of the screen to tell me that one of my favorite songs is playing on another channel. To my knowledge, there are no USB controlled radios for Sirius. Therefore, is your consumer friendly comment based on the fact that Sirius has free internet streams for subscribers? If so, I'm forced to say, "so what?" I'm not interested in streaming media. I wanted a radio that would interface to my PC and not impact my network. Punx1325, wait patiently and one is bound to turn up on eBay. I own 3 xmpcrs, but I'm not selling any of them. I use two and have one for a spare. I lucked out when XMFANSTORE had the $15 sale just before production stopped.

Absolutely the best thing that I ever purchased for my vehicle. XM is ad-free for music stations but a few stations like XM Comedy have them every 15 minutes. They can be distracting but are still less frequent than AM/FM ads.
