Personally, I think it is worth it. I have three XMPCRs (two in use and a spare) and I have a "Roady 2" on the way. My next car will have an XM, too.
The receivers are more expensive, but I'm no longer chained to clear channel clones for rock music. I have been listening to _music_, not to egotistical asshat DJ's. I can listen to news from BBC (They report, they don't editorialize like US newcasters), and I have news from all the major networks.
IMHO, broadcast radio is a rotting corpse.
I don't mind paying for the service. Music-wise, they are providing exactly what I want, not what some advertiser thinks I should hear. So much for Arbitron bragging rights.
Also, a quick check of Froogle shows that you can find radios for $80. If you check XM Fan sites, you can find them cheaper.
