Your Parent's Ideal Career, in your eyes
I havent' seen this type of thread and thought it might be interesting to hear from others after thinking about my dad recently.
My dad retired from the police force after 24 years of service. He was a good cop, and made many friends among his peers. He has a gift for gab while at the same time appearing very average, approachable, and likable. Thinking this over I think he should've been a local politician. He just has a way of making you feel like he isnt' very judgmental and he cared about regular people. Of course caring about ppl never got you voted into office. My mother was a housewife for 14 years and after working a scant 6 years or so after the divorce she copped out on disability (don't ask). If she had a career I would say it'd be a desk jockey in a municipal office, with it's great benefits such as lots of sick and holiday time off. what do you think your parents should've done for a career instead of what they actually do? It'd be more interesting if you come up with something other than what they actually do but if that's what you really think then by all means share.

My dad would have made a great jail bitch, ohhh, wait, that's what he is
My Mom, well, she's a nurse, and by gollies, she's the best darn nurse I know. She loves her job, and I can't imagine her doing anything else, it's her niche

Dad's a lawyer, but would have made a great referee as he used to referee all the arguments that I had with my mother when I was an impossible teenager.
Or a politician for never taking sides in the mom battles. (Her hair is fine, it's ok that she plays sports, it's ok that her friends are all boys, it's ok that she doesn't play with dolls, it's ok that your mother doesn't udnerstand you now, she will (he lied), it's OK that she is hard on you, it will make you a better person (it's made me psychotic) Mom - was a university professort of english - she'd make a great gossip columnist because she always was asking my brother and sister what i was up to -- they never knew, so she'd invent stuff. either that or a professional nag - she's really good at taht.

I think my mom would have been a great chef.
As it is, she's a great nurse. Bless all the great nurses. (Thumb your nose at the idiot doctors that treat them like shit.)

I think my dad's official title was "Network Engineer and Analyst." Before that, he did work on microwave transmitters (layoffs got him,) and before that he did various jobs on the Hubble Telescope (before you ask, no, he was not the one who screwed up the optics ) That job ended in a layoff after the telescope was launched and Perkin Elmer downsized. Way back in the day, he did Airforce radio intelligence, observing Soviet flight patterns and working on decoding transmissions. I still have an original copy of the commendation he got from the president after he broke a Soviet communications code. Among the papers, I also have a letter from the base commander informing him that his hairstyle did not meet USAF standards and to report to the barber within two days. What I don't have a copy of, but wish I did, is the paperwork informing him that he was going to be court-martialed after a potato chip was found under his bed (yes, one single alleged potato chip. He never saw any disciplinary action because he was able to prove that it was actually a footprint from when someone with ridged boot heels stepped in wet paint.)
He also would have been a great pro hockey coach or manager, having coached the local High School team to the state championships during his time as coach there. My mother currently works as the Educational Programs Coordinator of a local museum, and it is a good job for her, but doesn't pay nearly enough to support the family after my dad died. With a Masters in English and an MBA, she could do a whole lot of other things. One of her former jobs was a management position at Chamion/International Paper. |

Interesting thread.
Dad was really born to be an engineer, but he also would have been a good chef. Dad's the cook in the family. Mom, who writes and reads, would make a good book editor, even though she's very good at her job as an instructional designer.

My dad would have made a great lawyer. He knows his shit and he argues/debate on a daily basis with everyone/anyone he can find, extremely good at it. Or anything that have to do with debate/philosophy.
My mom...I think she'd be an excellent nurse. She have so much patient for my dad (who's really hot tempered), and she cares so much about everyone around her.

both my parents are fantastic teachers. they were honestly born to do it.
however, for the purposes of this thread, lets say they aren't teachers. my dad would be a phenomenal chef. i mean, he is already, but if that was his profession, he would be remarkably accomplished. my mother often curses herself for not pursuing a career in art. thats what she'd be if she weren't a teacher, and what she should be doing on the side.

As with bundy's parents, they're currently very, very good high school teachers. I think both of them would rather be teachers in a cultural and political environment that has more respect for the teaching profession.
Outside of that currently impossible wish, I'm sure my mother and father could have been a professional violinist and pianist respectively. If they left teaching now, they might go and open a coffee shop. I think my father would enjoy getting a bunch of regular customers sitting around drinking espresso and playing scrabble while he dressed up in a tux like Rick from Casablance and played old George Gershwin and Noel Coward tunes on the piano. |

My father should have been a professional athlete. He retired from a life-long mom-and-pop clothing store that he ran with my mother (they worked side by side every single day), but his dream was always in sports.
In college, he was a Bo Jackson-type athlete who excelled in every single sport he tried. He attended Auburn on a football scholarship (and even scored a touchdown against the hated Crimson Tide), and could play well enough to start on the basketball team, the wrestling team, or the swimming team, but had to give up football and college because he'd already married my mother and had a family to support. My folks had three kids by the time they were 20. I know he was very satisfied with the way his life turned out, but I also know he'd have been one hell of a great pro athlete.

I don't know what else my dad would have been good in. He was an anesthesiologist for over 20 years.
My mom would be great as a real estate agent. She's actually taking classes now to go for her license

My dad would have been an amazing veterinarian. He loves animals and has rescued countless ones over the years.
My mother...that's a tough one. I never really thought about her doing anything else than what she does (hospital administrator). But I think she would have made a great doctor. She was a great nurse years ago, and loves taking care of people.
