IMO vs. IMHO
Ok so here I am spending another lonely night crawling the TFP boards. And then I see this post wit some guy saying IMHO.
I always thought it was IMO (in my opinion) Where did this extra H come from? It definately cant be a typo, cause Ive seen it more than one time. Question: What does this extra H stand for? |

I've altered the poll a little bit to reflect my feelings in the matter. I had an ex that would randomly make up acronyms, regardless of whether they were common knowledge, to describe everything. It got tedious, confusing, and downright annoying. I figure, if you have something that's important enough to say, say it, don't turn it into another silly acronym.

IMHO is from an interesting class of acronyms, the ETLAs, otherwise known as the Extended Three Letter Acronyms.
I think I've seen IMHO more often than IMO: hell, I've seen IMNSHO (...not so...) more often than IMO! IIRC, about half the time when I use IIRC, people don't know what it means: "If I Recall Correctly". Alot of the common acronyms come from usenet, which was around for decades before the web woke up. It had a much slower and steadier exponential growth rate, so picking up on the slang wasn't nearly as hard a task: on the web, most people in a medium are newbies it seems, just from the frantic rate of growth most everything has.

i could go either way, acronyms on typing are okay if used in moderation.

It is "humble" but I don't like it.
It sounds a bit like: "and anyone who disagrees with me is patently a moron"

I use IMO. If I'm trying to shorten something, I'm not going to use an extra letter like H.

Hmm...I've always thought of it as humble.
I *do* use imo fairly oft, but rarely imho, I just usually don't see it necessary to add the bit about humility, as I generally use 'imo' when I'm simply trying to clarify that it is merely my opinion, so the humility is implied to an extent, in my usage. If I need to include a bit about 'honest' then I use 'tbh' (to be honest). I've no problem using some of the more common acronyms on occasion. I view it as efficient (and yes, there is a difference btwn efficient and lazy ). Acronyms generally don't bug me, so long as they're not totally obscure...and as long as the user makes sure to avoid ridiculous redundancy. Example - something like 'imo, I think...' would drive me batty.

Acronymns are a just barely acceptable form of communication in chat rooms, where you are typing in real-time. Other than that, if you expect me to listen to you, you can take the half second it takes to spell the damn word out.

it's humble, but it just always sounds sarcastic. I think it's an English thing. The polite insult was surely invented over here (or maybe France, now I think about it). Anyway, it's "humble" as in "blatantly correct"

The H is either pompous beyond measure, or an unfunny joke reproduced for the millionth time.
IMO is a bad habit, but its longer brother is an act of criminality.

i've used the term IMO... and for extra emphasis i've used IMHO...
it is quite annoying, especially when you catch yourself actually thinking about saying I-M-O at the beginning of a sentence during a tutorial or lesson. i don't think the use of IMHO is pompous. i just think its lazy. oh, and i thought the H stood for Honest.

IMHO, the H stands for honest... and it appears that everyone has their own views on what the H really stands for. I don't believe any of us are incorrect.

After we've figured out if the H in IMHO is humble or honest, we can figure out what the H in Jesus H. Christ stands for. I've always thought it was Harold. remeber the lord's prayer? "our father, who art in heaven, Harold be thy name"

IMHO! I've never heard anyone think that the H is for Honest before. An interesting experience.
