IMHO is from an interesting class of acronyms, the ETLAs, otherwise known as the Extended Three Letter Acronyms.

I think I've seen IMHO more often than IMO: hell, I've seen IMNSHO (...not so...) more often than IMO!

IIRC, about half the time when I use IIRC, people don't know what it means: "If I Recall Correctly".

Alot of the common acronyms come from usenet, which was around for decades before the web woke up. It had a much slower and steadier exponential growth rate, so picking up on the slang wasn't nearly as hard a task: on the web, most people in a medium are newbies it seems, just from the frantic rate of growth most everything has.
