IMO vs. IMHO

Ok so here I am spending another lonely night crawling the TFP boards. And then I see this post wit some guy saying IMHO.
I always thought it was IMO (in my opinion)
Where did this extra H come from?

It definately cant be a typo, cause Ive seen it more than one time.

Question: What does this extra H stand for?

Jesus Pimp 06-06-2004 07:50 PM

H=Humble

And sometimes a person just doesn't feel humble. Well IMO anyway.

MaGlC_MaN 06-06-2004 07:57 PM

always heard it stood for "honest"..
but why add an extra letter when "IMO" get's it done? ;)

ps: that's just IMO

phredgreen 06-06-2004 08:39 PM

I've altered the poll a little bit to reflect my feelings in the matter. I had an ex that would randomly make up acronyms, regardless of whether they were common knowledge, to describe everything. It got tedious, confusing, and downright annoying. I figure, if you have something that's important enough to say, say it, don't turn it into another silly acronym.

Same here. Of course, I'd rather just spell it out more than anything. I'll use IMO for short-hand or something, but other than that...just no, not gonna use it.

I agree. Its annoying trying to figure out what the hell people are saying. I also get annoyed by other types of 'net speak'

IIRC with respect to the H in IMHO I've heard it to be humble but FWIW I tend to think that OMGWTFBBQ is ROLFLMAOPIMP funny.

Averett 06-07-2004 06:32 AM

Thanks, my head just exploded :p

Jam 06-07-2004 06:40 AM

i figure it meant honest...

bttytt i think people should just write out the full words... :P

anyways isnt this nonsense?

Ripsaw 06-07-2004 06:43 AM

WTF?

Polyphobic 06-07-2004 06:48 AM

In my honest opinion.
I rarely use IMO. The more acronyms and letters in the acronyms the better.

Yakk 06-07-2004 08:26 AM

IMHO is from an interesting class of acronyms, the ETLAs, otherwise known as the Extended Three Letter Acronyms.

I think I've seen IMHO more often than IMO: hell, I've seen IMNSHO (...not so...) more often than IMO!

IIRC, about half the time when I use IIRC, people don't know what it means: "If I Recall Correctly".

Alot of the common acronyms come from usenet, which was around for decades before the web woke up. It had a much slower and steadier exponential growth rate, so picking up on the slang wasn't nearly as hard a task: on the web, most people in a medium are newbies it seems, just from the frantic rate of growth most everything has.

emmdubbs 06-07-2004 09:03 AM

personally i prefer IHOP.

;)

i could go either way, acronyms on typing are okay if used in moderation.

Rubyee 06-07-2004 09:55 AM

I thought it was high, as in

"In my HIGH opinion."

I could be wrong.

stevie667 06-07-2004 10:09 AM

I use both, much in the way one would vary the tone of their voice to convey different messages in conversation.

Thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it.

denim 06-07-2004 10:10 AM

I know it as "humble", and usually sarcastic. You'll sometimes see "IMAO", meaning "arrogant" too.

Rekna 06-07-2004 10:12 AM

it is humble

ibis 06-07-2004 10:30 AM

I never understand why people say this sort of thing in the first place. We know it's your opinion because *you're* saying it.

Lasereth 06-07-2004 11:01 AM

I can't stand Internet abbreviations. I spell out everything...and most of all, I don't say the dreaded LOL!!

-Lasereth

Pacifier 06-07-2004 11:02 AM

It is "humble" but I don't like it.
It sounds a bit like:
"and anyone who disagrees with me is patently a moron"

Jeff 06-07-2004 11:10 AM

I use IMO. If I'm trying to shorten something, I'm not going to use an extra letter like H.

la petite moi 06-07-2004 11:22 AM

I thought 'H' was for honest.

And like a few of you have said, if I want to say something, I just type it out. I don't need to shorten every single phrase out there.

SiN 06-07-2004 11:35 AM

Hmm...I've always thought of it as humble.
I *do* use imo fairly oft, but rarely imho, I just usually don't see it necessary to add the bit about humility, as I generally use 'imo' when I'm simply trying to clarify that it is merely my opinion, so the humility is implied to an extent, in my usage.

If I need to include a bit about 'honest' then I use 'tbh' (to be honest).

I've no problem using some of the more common acronyms on occasion. I view it as efficient (and yes, there is a difference btwn efficient and lazy :p ).

Acronyms generally don't bug me, so long as they're not totally obscure...and as long as the user makes sure to avoid ridiculous redundancy. Example - something like 'imo, I think...' would drive me batty.

:)

I completely agree.

CSflim 06-07-2004 01:05 PM

Acronymns are a just barely acceptable form of communication in chat rooms, where you are typing in real-time. Other than that, if you expect me to listen to you, you can take the half second it takes to spell the damn word out.

apeman 06-07-2004 01:28 PM

it's humble, but it just always sounds sarcastic. I think it's an English thing. The polite insult was surely invented over here (or maybe France, now I think about it). Anyway, it's "humble" as in "blatantly correct"

manalone 06-07-2004 01:33 PM

The H is either pompous beyond measure, or an unfunny joke reproduced for the millionth time.

IMO is a bad habit, but its longer brother is an act of criminality.

bundy 06-07-2004 02:17 PM

i've used the term IMO... and for extra emphasis i've used IMHO...

it is quite annoying, especially when you catch yourself actually thinking about saying I-M-O at the beginning of a sentence during a tutorial or lesson.

i don't think the use of IMHO is pompous. i just think its lazy.

oh, and i thought the H stood for Honest.

tecoyah 06-07-2004 02:33 PM

H= Humble, which is why I don't use it.....I lack the humility.

World's King 06-07-2004 02:44 PM

Just fuckin' type it out.

Munku 06-07-2004 07:55 PM

PIHA. TARAYNKWTFTATA. BTJMHO. :/

Amethyst 06-07-2004 07:59 PM

I don't type it out because I can't spell.

ladyadmin 06-07-2004 08:01 PM

IMHO, the H stands for honest... and it appears that everyone has their own views on what the H really stands for. I don't believe any of us are incorrect.

phredgreen 06-07-2004 09:27 PM

After we've figured out if the H in IMHO is humble or honest, we can figure out what the H in Jesus H. Christ stands for. I've always thought it was Harold. remeber the lord's prayer? "our father, who art in heaven, Harold be thy name"

I want some of what phred's having. ;)

---

There needs to be an option for all three. I'm a dork that way.

Mehoni 06-08-2004 02:47 AM

H is for Humble, F is for Fuck...

IMHO! I've never heard anyone think that the H is for Honest before. An interesting experience.

he's got a point though, I'd never thought about it before

Jolt 06-08-2004 05:23 PM

I don't use these.

instead, I occasionally say "IMNSHO"

humility is for the inferior!
