Cat vs. Dog
I realize this isn't the most original poll ever, but I am still curious as to how many of you prefer a cat to a dog, and vice versa. I have a theory that most women prefer cats, and most men prefer dogs... Why that would be, I don't know, but it's just my personal experience. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this seemingly meaningless topic.
Well this was SUPPOSED to be a poll, but since I clicked the wrong thing apparently and couldn't edit it to be one (nor delete it...) then I guess it's good ol' type-o-rama... I personally prefer dogs. I find their companionship, loyalty and obedience really admirable and appealing. I don't really like cats...sometimes they're nice and all, but mostly they're too arrogant for my liking and just plain tick me off.

Definitely dogs for me. They are loyal, obedient, and treat you like they really do enjoy your company. Cats, on the other hand, seem to only tolerate the company of humans as long as it benefits them. No loyalty, no friendship. I don't see the appeal.
Dog: "Woohoo! My favorite master is home! I must go and welcome him because I'm so happy that he's back!" Cat: "Oh, him. Alright, human, I'll let you pet me, but only because you are such a loyal and obedient slave. Alright, thats enough. It is time for my meal now. Chop chop."

Got to be dogs - there are enough people on this planet who'll treat you like crap that you really don't need a cat!

iīm allergic to cats.
so its got to be dogs for me. but i would have chosen them first anyway. i guess they just make better companions than cats. plus, i dislike the whole killing small native animals on a nightly basis thing that cats do. i donīt mean to say that dogs arenīt a threat to native wildlife, but cats are just better killers.

I'm definately a cat man.
Yes, cats are arrogant and self-involved. Much like myself. Maybe that's why I feel a special kinship with them. Dogs, however, stike me as incredibly annoying and just plain disgusting. I don't mind having a cat lick my hand or arm, but a dog licking my face...eww. |

Dog man here all the way. Dogs a loyal loving freinds. They are geneuinely happy to see you. They are sad when your not feeling well or hafta leave. They really are the best freind you'll ever have. And cats? well, cats just use you for food. They dont love you, and dont care about you, they pay just enough attention so that youll feed em.
As for cats: I like cats, got lots of good recipes!

Dogs for me.
I'm kinda scared of cats. This may be because i happen to know for a fact that my friends cat is secretly seeking to take over the universe and get rid of all human kind . . . . . . so i may be a little bias.

Cats for now. They require less yard space, something I am very sadly lacking in. Just enough room for a BBQ and a lawn set.
They are less maintenance as well, which is good as it seems I am the only one around here who maintains them.

I am an animal lover.
I like cats better than dogs though, They are more independant than dogs and alot smarter too. You can't train a cat like you can a dog (Atleast I have never seen a trained cat)...Other than that though..Cats are more intelligent than dogs. Cats can survive way longer than a dog outside. Cats are cleaner than dogs Cats can be just as affectionate as dogs...If not more, But only when they want to be. I had a cat that would play fetch with the tinfoil out of packs of smokes..As soon as he heard the noise of you opening a pack of smokes, He was right at your feet waiting for you to throw the little tinfoil ball. He would bring it back too. When I get out on my own i plan on getting a newborn rottwieler and a cat...Maybe 2 cats. Look at wild dogs..Then look at wild cats, Which one do you think would out survive eachother?

Cats are good as long as they stay out of my way. I don't mind em, but I could never see what anybody sees in them. Although I guess it's just personal preference. Nice to see so many doglovers on TFP though.
My dog is a dog, is a dog 4 life!

I'm a cat guy. Right now I have a big orange and white cat that I think is a coon cat.
He is very affectionate and follows me and my wife around the house all the time. One of his clever tricks is to hide around the corner and pounce on me or my wife when we walk by, pretending he's a fierce hunter but never using his claws. Sometimes when we walk by him, he will grap us with his paws to get our attention so he can get petted. Really nice cat. |

I love them both and would have as many as our house could hold if Ratbastid didn't interfere
We've got 2 cats with very distinct but loving personalities, and a deeply sweet chow mix. No way I could choose between them.

Woof woof!
I have a dog (Golden retriever) and she is the ultimate companion. Just wants to be with me no matter what's on the agenda. We swim, hunt, hike in the woods........nothing human or animal is so loving. Why is she better than a cat? Here's why: If I die I know she would be very sad and she herself might not survive. If you have a cat and you die and someone doesn't find you, your cat will eat you and not have a second thought. |

Cats are cute, Dogs are cool. If i had to have one, i'd have a cat, as they are smaller, and dont smell as bad. But thats just me. I'm a city guy, so the cat would be inside always, and i wouldnt want to keep a dog inside, where it couldnt run and play and the like.

I'm a cat guy, for exactly the same reasons why many of you don't like them. Cat's do what they want, when they want, if they want. They have a mind of their own. I respect their independence.
A dogs' loud and constant quest for approval pisses me off...

I have 3 German Shepherds they are all excellent companions for outside and rough and tumble fun. I also have a cat which is nice to have around in the house something that fits in the house quiet, relaxed, peaceful. I couldn't pick one over the other. |

My cat is just as friendly and loving as a dog. He'll curl up on my lap wherever and whenever I'm sitting. When I get home, he'll jump up onto the roof of my car so that I'll scratch his head and he can rub against me.
I have had several less than pleasant experiences with dogs in the past, and I'd rather not take a chance again, even with a dog that I think is friendly. |

I think choosing cats cause they're less maitenance and require less space/easier to take care of is really lazy. Almost like Cats are for pet owners who don't really want the responsibility of a pet. I've owned lots a cats and lots a dogs....I don't see the big difference in responsibility.....what sometimes you have to WALK the dogs or let em out the back door? OMG HOW HORRIBLE IS THAT?!!! Thats the only difference that I can think of. My 2 dogs are doing exactly what a cat would be doing right now. One is sitting on the couch licking her paws and the other is laying on the floor chewing on his toys. You just need to pick the right kinda dogs. If ya got a small place get a small dog.....they're less maitenance than a big dog. Plus a cat would probably cost more.
Now bottom line why I would pick a dog over a cat and the main reason why they actually just might be better....Paul Rodriguez said it best.....cats are useless. Asside from the mouse running around the the house they really don't do a damn thing. If your house was on fire.....or someone broke into your house more often than not the cat would run away. The dog would bark as loud as it could and wake you up to warn you of the present danger.....the dog would attack the intruder. Whens the last time you heard of a "guard-cat" ??? Dog person all the way cats are cute and I love them just as much as any animal but no. Asta!!

I really just love animals in general and I think dogs and cats are equally lovable and wonderful pets. However there's just something about cats that makes me love them even more than most pets. Having a soft little cat cuddled up in your lap purring away is better than a dog anyday. Although I gotta say, I'm currently in love with my sister's new puppy.

I much prefer cats, they're clean, they look awesome, and they have a lot of personality (anyone who says they don't is ignorant), they also don't leave messes on the lawn, they don't slobber all over you, and they don't cry all nigth if you leave them alone. Yep, cats are cool. I like dogs too, but I'd never have one as a pet.

I am a dog lover. I have had dogs all of my life. All of them female except my first one. This is the first time in my life that I haven't had any pets. There is a side of me that misses the companionship of a dog and then there is the side of me that doesn't miss cleaning up after them and worrying about getting a sitter if I am going someplace where they can't.
Right now I am free to do whatever I want whenever I want so I am in no rush to have a pet. But when I do.....Dog all the way. Cats are cute in their own right, I just prefer dogs.

I've had cats all my life, but never a dog until the last few months. I got a female puppy from the pound; she's at least mostly a German Shepherd/labrador mix. She's not as big yet as I wanted, but I hope she'll grow more.
I'm not really feeling the best friend thing. She follows me from room to room, and whines when she's alone, etc. but she acts like a cat a lot of the time. She's selfish and rough. She bites hard and often. She chases the cats. I hope it'll get better as she gets older. |
