Movie Stars on the Downfall?
Quote:
With movies being made at such high prices, and having such high returns, of course the actors want to make a buck, and of course there are so many places that American/Western movies get shown, that they're bound to generate obscene amounts of revenue. But it seems that is starting to change. I agree that audiences today are more fickle, and less likely to waste their time paying attention to movie stars. They are also less likely to waste money on watching them in the cinema, or buying magazines, merchandise, etc. that refers them. We have less time to daydream, and less disposable income. I think this is a good thing. I still want to see "movie stars", but in a more humble role, in higher quality dramatic films, and less popcorn action, please. I'm not sure that will happen, seeing as the current tendency socially is that what is disposable is good. So anything that delves deeper will be hard pressed to resist. Do you think "movie stars'" paychecks are over-inflated? Do you think we will see less of them on our screens because of current trends?

This is what happens to most things without substance. The culture of celebrity is funny because most people are famous simply because they're famous. Many of the top billed actors aren't even good, they're just recognizable and well-liked. Its all just hot air. People are slowly learning that they can't aspire to be like these role models because they haven't necessarily done anything that would warrant appreciation.

For the studio it's an investment. A forth Pirates of the Caribbean film would be lucky to hit 150 million without Johnny Depp. It sounds expensive as hell to pay him 56 million dollars for a movie but without him the movie would flop. World wide box office the 3rd movie did 960 million dollars. I don't have DVD sales info on the 3rd movie but the second one, according to really old data had at least $250 million on DVD and bluray.
Now, Johnny depp is actually talented and he's a great actor. He definitely deserves to be the highest pay actor in Hollywood. Even if it's for a movie likes Pirates. These big movies also give the studios a chance to take risks on movies that aren't likely to make a huge profit or sometimes no profit at all. These huge movies with their huge budgets and huge actors with questionable talent are a necessary evil, in my opinion.

Aside from really talented actors (well...even most talented actors) get paid way too much. Even though I love acting & theatre myself, I wouldn't WANT to be paid that much. I don't think any price would make me want to be bombarded by paparazzi, interviews, people taking things out of context, being in tabloids or having nonsense rumors going around, and not having privacy, and the opportunity to lose myself.
But, in this case- it's the economy. Businesses are going downhill, so a lot of people are being laid off or having to spend more money on gas & groceries, therefore, not having extra money to go see movies at the theatre, buy magazines, etc. We are comfortable checking the internet, watching E News, or waiting half a year to rent a movie and watch it at home with their already-purchased big-screen digital tv's. People are realizing that they have what they need in the comfort of our own homes for cheaper. Hell- it's what WE do. The only time we go to the movie theatre is when a BIG action flick is out- in fact, I think we've only been to the theatre twice this year. It's just too expensive! Same with kids' flicks- I hesitate going unless it's a decent flick with good reviews, otherwise it's a waste of my money and time, even if my kid enjoys it (which they enjoy just about everything). They can wait to see it at home when it comes out. That's just how I've been for the longest time. So I'm not surprised that there is a Movie Star Stock and that it's plummeting. It's a chain reaction. But it is interesting to hear and see what will happen or what actors do/think as things worsen.

Not that I am in the know but, alot of actors investment in their own movies and in return get a percentage of sales on top of their salary for the movie. Smart really, if it goes huge they reap the rewards, if it flops they are still left with what more people make in a lifetime. Not bad for 3 months work.
