For the studio it's an investment. A forth Pirates of the Caribbean film would be lucky to hit 150 million without Johnny Depp. It sounds expensive as hell to pay him 56 million dollars for a movie but without him the movie would flop. World wide box office the 3rd movie did 960 million dollars. I don't have DVD sales info on the 3rd movie but the second one, according to really old data had at least $250 million on DVD and bluray.
Now, Johnny depp is actually talented and he's a great actor. He definitely deserves to be the highest pay actor in Hollywood. Even if it's for a movie likes Pirates. These big movies also give the studios a chance to take risks on movies that aren't likely to make a huge profit or sometimes no profit at all.
These huge movies with their huge budgets and huge actors with questionable talent are a necessary evil, in my opinion.
