Everyone needs to know how to use a stick welder? Home brew beer? I've soldered before but not used a stick welder. And I've never brewed beer.

And where is whistling? I can't support any list without whistling; it's the perfect instrument.

The only ones I can't confidently say I can do are these three:

55. Tackle steep drops on a mountain bike--define "steep"...I can't downhill comfortably. I can rappel and belay, both with commercial and hand-tied harness, though, and I'd say that's more practical.

68. Throw a spiral--football was never my thing, though I would counter being able to throw a frisbee, juggle (both 3 and 4 items), and hack a hacky sack should be interchangeable here.

83. Coolant hydrometer--This one I plead ignorance on the basis of living in Arizona, where it is below freezing three nights a year. We don't even run antifreeze--just straight water with Water Wetter for anti-corrision

Other comments on stuff I can do:

7. Use a stick welder--stick welders suck, most hobbiests have migs these days. Stick welding is like using a pair of pliers to hold a pencil that shoots out molten metal and fire while it tries its best to stick to whatever you are welding and ground out.
13. Escape a sinking car--just roll down the windows to let the pressures equalize
69. Fly a stunt kite--one up...I can make a stunt kite!
72. Tie a bowline--I use a trucker's hitch way more than I use a bowline.
74. Whittle--not before they can sharpen a knife
95. Infrared thermometer...it's just point and click, quite brainless in fact.

Good list!

A lot of this is thanks to Boy Scouts.

Argh, my manly Achille's heel. Despite years of trying and my best efforst, I cannot whistle with my fingers. I feel less of a man because of it.

Esquire should do this list. Then it would include things like condom know-how, and probably "bed a goth girl".

I can do most of the list, but it makes me realize how rusty I've gotten, living in a city environment.

Cool find, Charlatan. I'll highlight my own list when I have more time.

I must say, I think my dad taught me quite well, given that I could answer yes for most of this list... my mom only taught me how to make a bed, basically.

Thanks, Charlatan, for ignoring the gender bias of this. I italicized the ones that I can do, or am reasonably confident that I could do on the spot, if necessary:

Automotive
1. Handle a blowout
2. Drive in snow
3. Check trouble codes
4. Replace fan belt--But I want to learn how to do this, or at least tighten it, this week.
5. Wax a car
6. Conquer an off-road obstacle
7. Use a stick welder
8. Hitch up a trailer
9. Jump start a car

Handling Emergencies
10. Perform the Heimlich
11. Reverse hypothermia
12. Perform hands-only CPR
13. Escape a sinking car--depends if the windows are electric or not...

Home
14. Carve a turkey
15. Use a sewing machine
16. Put out a fire
17. Home brew beer--Would like to learn how to do this!
18. Remove bloodstains from fabric
19. Move heavy stuff
20. Grow food
21. Read an electric meter
22. Shovel the right way
23. Solder wire
24. Tape drywall
25. Split firewood
26. Replace a faucet washer

30. Prune bushes and small trees
31. Iron a shirt

34. Fell a tree
35. Replace a broken windowpane--Could probably do this, but have never actually seen it done.

39. Change a diaper
40. Grill with charcoal
41. Sew a button on a shirt
42. Fold a flag

Medical Myths
43. Treat frostbite

That's a good division of labour right there... I am trying to think where our division lies. I was going to say that I do most things but my wife is the brains of the organization.

He cooks, I wash the dishes, we both split all the other household chores down the middle... and I take care of all the car maintenance. It just comes more naturally to me. He's a bit better with handling financial stuff than I am, and I do a lot of the "planning" stuff, but it all works out evenly... that's our conscious intention.

If we ever get our own house in the future, I will also take up most of the house maintenance as well, though I doubt I'll ever have a kick-ass workshop like my carpenter dad had when I was growing up (that's where I learned to use all those power tools).

I am impressed with the number of items each of us can check off on these lists. We are a very capable group of people.

I wonder if represent an average or an above average group of people?

I have been thinking about this list and think there are a few items missing... what would you add?

1. Clean and gut a fish.
2. Change a bike tire.
3. Shingle a roof.
4. Use a compass
5. Read a topographical map.
6. Paddle a canoe/kayak (properly... no lily dipping!).

It may be that those who can't check off that many, feel a bit intimidated about responding... I probably would... so there is some self-selection bias in those who are responding to the thread.

Funny, I can do pretty much all of the above (though I don't like gutting fish, I can fillet one pretty well--and have helped my dad shingle our roof a few times when I was youger), but can't do the bike tire. Go figure! I assume it's really not that difficult, so I would be able to do it in an emergency if I had a pump and a spare tube, I think.

As I mentioned above, I think cleaning a bathroom (thoroughly) and picking up after oneself are ESSENTIAL skills for both genders, especially when sharing a household with others.

I would also add relationship-specific skills which are all-too-often NOT taught by too many parents (and for which many people need to go to counseling to sort out), such as:

1. Fighting fairly
2. Not acting/speaking in a passive-aggressive manner, or attacking verbally
3. Not crawling into a cave when conflict arises
4. Expressing your sexual and emotional needs
5. Being comfortable with your body
6. Listening
7. Negotiating an equitable division of labor in a household
8. Feeding a relationship with the little things that make it worthwhile
9. Engaging with spouse and children on a daily basis
10. Managing money as a unit
11. Not becoming a workaholic OR a lazy slacker

I've done first aid and survival training, plus read up a hell of a lot on it. I'm confident that I can do any of the emergency things well enough to keep someone alive for paramedics, and the survival ones well enough to make it for a few days in whatever comes up. Here are the ones I admittedly cannot do:

Automotive
7. Use a stick welder - I've spot welded, but never had a chance to do "real" welding. I'm the king of soldering, though.

Home
14. Carve a turkey - Technically I can. In fact, I carved the turkey for the family last Thanksgiving, but my results are nowhere near as consistent or nice-looking as when my uncle does it.

Military Know-How
50. Drop and give the perfect pushup - Everyone in my family has a weak upper body (yes, this is our collective fault.) I've never done a pushup in my life, I'm just not capable of it.

Outdoors
55. Tackle steep drops on a mountain bike - I can do biking on trails and roads, but I've never tried steep off-roading. I haven't had a working bike in years. I think I could manage pretty well if I took it slow and had someone to coach me as I learned, but that's not enough to say I could do it.

Teach Your Kids
68. Throw a spiral - Sorry, dad, I still can't do it and it's not your fault. Probably never will with arthritic shoulders.

Technology
80. Ditch your hard drive - I know the proper way, but steel core 7.62 and 5.45 are so much more fun than drilling it.

Master Key Workshop Tools
96. Sand blaster - I've used a bead blaster, does that count?1

If you have to do this... I'm guessing you have more things to worry about then actually getting the stain out.

I can do bout 33-35 on that list, but there's a few they should have included and others they could have excluded.
Simple auto body work should have been included, stick welder left out.
They included treat a burn, but left out treating shock or prepping a serious wound.
And, of course, Halx's addition.

I can solder a wire!

Once on a New Year's gig I brought a real bow-tie.
Nobody in the Big Band or those I asked in the audience knew how to tie it.
Apparently Willow Rosenberg does.

I live with an Eagle Scout who is very mechanically inclined. Whatever I can't do on that list (which isn't much), he can, or he can teach me how to do it. Really, though, I have my mother to thank. Before I was allowed to drive the car as a teenager, I had to show her I knew how to check the fluids, belts, and hoses; that I knew how to change a tire; and that I knew how to drive in the snow. This kind of preparedness and her attitude of "you better know how to do it yourself because no one else is going to do it for you" touches a lot of different areas, not just the automotive one.

One easy way for people to check off some of the things on that list is to take a first aid/CPR class

The only ones I have problems with are the "teach your kids" section, as I don't have kids,
and the military-made bed is something I don't bother with (though I know how to do).

I've driven down a few very steep hills on various flavors of bicycle, and jumped completely off of others (while still on the bike, of course. Who wants to drop 15 or so feet without something more comfy than the earth to land on?)

How come yer supposed to know how to use an arc welder, but there's no mention of an acetylene torch? BA Baracus wouldn't have made the A-Team if he didn't know how to use a torch.
