My sister wants her CCP.....I'm oficially scared
First off, appologies for the length of the story.
So my sister calls me up to find out what you have to do to get your CCP in our state. To begin with, I'm like cool...and so I tell her. Keep in mind, my sister does not currently on a gun, for that, I am not glad. My sister and I grew up in the same house, same parents and all that. We both grew up around guns and were taught how to use them. However, I think my sister has forgotten much of what we learned when we were younger. My father was not able to aim and shoot a handgun with much accuracy, but he could hit just about anything just by point and shoot. This is how he tried to teach us to shoot. Didn't work for either of us. My sister later went into a law enforcement explorer post and again, she was tought how to shoot. They tought the kids in the post how to shoot using the cup and saucer stance, breathing techniques and the like, mainly for competition shooting. Fast forward to present day. My sister tells me she wants her CCP so I tell her what she has to do to get one. The first thing she says is, "I think I'll get one of those little suede cases and keep it under the seat of my truck." Excuse me, do you really think you are going to have time to dig it out and take it out of the case if you really need it!!! But this isn't even what scares me. She came over to the house so I could talk to her some more and show her some other things. I hand her a unloaded gun....she never checked it. She said, "I didn't think you would hand me a loaded gun". I was like, that's not the point. I was teaching her a new way to aim...had her aiming at a clock on the wall on the other side of the bed. My 2 year old comes into the bedroom and is playing on the floor...no big deal. He climbs up on the bed and my sister does not stop pointing the gun in that general direction. I was like "do you mind not pointing the gun in his general direction". She says, "I'm not pointing it at him". I was like, I know you aren't pointing it [b]at[\b] him, but it's in his general direction and I'm trying to teach him to [b]not[\b] do that." I end up having to just take my son off the bed because she doesn't stop. I should have just smacked her right there. We continue to talk about things and I tell her she is just going to have to be careful and not shoot her boyfriend when he comes home at 3 am since he works nights. Her reply was, "I wouldn't do that, he would use a key". Let me tell you know, that if you can tell the difference between someone using a key or a butterknife to get into your place while you are asleep at 3am, more power to ya but most people can't do that. She has decided she needs a full size light weight gun because it will be easy for her to get her hands around. However she messed up her elbow and is such a puss she won't do anything to strengthen it back up. She complains that my ruger is to heavy when it is unloaded at 30 oz. Looks like if she gets a gun it will be a glock. They only weigh around 20 oz. The more I think about how she acted, the more I think she does not need a gun at this time. Unfortunately I am not in the position to spend the time to teach her what she has forgotton. Besideds, she has already decided I'm not worth talking to. After spending all the time I did with her, she still says, "I'm going to talk to dad about it and see what he says". That and the fact I'm the brother makes her not want to listen to me. Typing this out makes me feel a little better, but still am uneasy about her getting a handgun before she gets some basic training in safety and handling. Getting that down will be the hard part...teaching old dogs new tricks and all. Guess I'll have to try and make some time available to her in the next few months and try and imporve her safety habbits. Comments and Suggestions welcome. |

I dont know that there is much you can do to prevent her from having one, and hopefully she will learn enough in the process.
That said, she needs some instruction. The part about the kid is just scary. It strikes me that she seems to want the gun just because she thinks it will be fun or cool, and she has her priorities all mixed up. You dont get a CCP just because. I understand you dont have time to teach her, but I think you could at least sit her down, minus a gun, and tell her, in dead seriousness, what she needs to do. Muzzle awareness. Trigger awareness. Never trust that the gun is unloaded. And all the rest. Sit her down and tell her, forcefully, this isnt a joke, this isnt fun, this is dead serious and you need to listen. Spell it out for her as seriously as you can. Shouldnt take longer than 30 minutes, and hopefully some of it will stick.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! Taking the basic gun safety course doesn't come near preparing a person for utilizing lethal force in their defense. The fact the person in question here is a former law enforcement explorer should help, but she should still hit the range every couple of months at a minimum. |

ummm, hmmm.
It sounds like your sister does not have a healthy respect for guns. How you instill that in anyone, I have no idea. Usually it happens after their first ND*, but I hope it doesn't get to that point for her. (*ND = negligent discharge, sometimes called an AD = accidental discharge)

The only thing I can recommend is either sit her down and really make your point that firearms are DANGEROUS and if you dont respect them you will hurt/kill yourself or SOMEONE ELSE!
Other than that, talk to your father and see if he can talk to her about it or if you could sit in when then go through safety procedures. Good Luck! |

Sign her up for a basic handgun course. It will either teach her some safe firearm handling skills, or the instructor will give her the kind of verbal smackdown that she needs.
