I'd really like to grab one of those up, but all the mags are WWI technology and if you leave those loaded for any length of time the springs will take a set from what I am told.

Meh. BAR was a little too heavy and the mag was a little too small. They could have easily made larger box mags, even with the technology of the time.

But too heavy? I dunno about that, the M14s lack of weight made it unusable in fully automatic mode.

I'm having a sword made for me right now from Albion Armourers.
It's the Lindsay family Discerner on which the sword from John Boorman's Excalibur was based. It will take 16 weeks to make but this is how it looks:

It is actually balanced and battle-ready which is why it takes so long to craft by hand. But I always wanted the Excalibur from the movie.

i agree, something about putting a tassel at the of your blade makes it sexy. if anyone is into TMA, youtube some long tassel straightsword. The object is to keep the tassel inline with the blade. Very hard stuff to learn. It's on my todo list.

Well, I wouldn't have made the M14 full auto. The advantage of the M14 was that it was lightweight, reliable, and had the detachable 20 round box mag. Not suited for jungle combat, mind you, but a great gun still used today. I had a few in A-stan for the sharpshooter role.

Full auto was a stupid idea in the first place on the Garand platform. The E3 model of the M14 was a joke at best.

We had the M60 for full auto suppression. Did a decent job, I think. I'm not a fan of the M60: I had to use it in Afghanistan recently and it is not the most well designed automatic weapon of any era. Too many pieces and the barrel change is cumbersome to say the least.

I still feel that the 7.62x39 round is superior to the 5.56x45 for modern short range combat. The 7.62x51 is a near perfect GPMG / designated marksman round. All these rounds have a niche in modern warfare.

Big bullets do a good job of making big holes. Law of physics. (/rant)

The other day my wife's pet hermit crabs (don't ask) died and I walked to some woodsy area carrying the animals in a plastic bag and a shovel in the other hand, so I could bury them there.
I started looking at the tool and thinking...It's heavy, both ends are metal, but it's easy to wield. Potentially very deadly.
I heard that in WW1 and 2 they used to sharpen the edges of shovel so they could chop up anyone who would surprise them while they were digging the trenches...great for melee combat, I think.

I would love to own a H&H Double Rifle .700, but that will probably never happen. However, I would also like a 1874 Sharps Buffalo Rifle 45-70 (reproduction is fine) or even a PTRD/S.

For general target shooting I would go with a Ruger 10/22, M1 Carbine or SVT-40.

The blade arrived and it feels quite solid and very well balanced. It even came fully sharpened! The blade itself is not quite as glossy as the film sword because it's based on the real Lindsay sword.

They also offer a briefcase version which can be fired without opening the case from a trigger in the handle. Probably best to keep your finger off the trigger while carrying normally as you could shoot yourself in the calf.

Yes, I do. It's actually more of an issue of storage. I have no where to really keep them, and a brand new M14 runs about a grand. Not in my price range. I'm actually helping my dad restore a gun cabinet, partially so I can store a few rifles I inherited from my grandfather.

The Springfield SOCOM-16 is a great all-around piece. I was turned off by the "short barrel everything" trend at first, but after reviews and experience... thing is sweet.

Only people that mention the M249 have never had to carry or shoot one. Kids see it in a video game and think it's the bomb-diggity.

Despite the fact that the M249 SAW is indeed a "worthless piece of junk" over other light machine gun designs, I believe it has the highest kill rate of any US infantry weapon used during the GWoT. The torture-device twist collapse stock sucks the most, the short barrels are used all the time for no reason, and there aren't enough "nut sacks" to go around for those who need 'em.

The M240B (aka "the Pig") is a beautiful gun from a technical standpoint... but not for a grunt to carry. Zero ergonomics and 27 lbs standalone (no barrel or ammo). It's good when it's on a truck or somebody else is carrying the damn thing!

Good thing the DoD is looking into the newer lightweight model.
