It died...any idea?
I hope there are some well-learned computer guys here.
My computer stopped working... I don't have the case cover on, so all I did was plug a USB connector onto a mount on the motherboard, turned it back on, power up, and nothing. The computer would power up and nothing happened, not even a beep out of the PC speaker. So, I ripped it down to barebones--video card, 1 memory stick, CPU. Nothing. Different CPU--Nothing Different power supply (old inwin 235w, enough for barebones Athlon XP?)--nothing Tried no ram and the PC speaker did make a warning noise. I assumed it was the motherboard and as luck would have it. I had an unused motherboard sitting around. So, I tried a different motherboard-----nothing! Tried the different motherboard with different ram and CPU! Nothing! I didn't try the other powersupply on the different motherboard. If my CPU died, the other was lent to me after extensive use and may be bad. If the motherboard I was using died, the one I tested it with was new, but I had two of the same ones not work on me before. The power supply I'm using is some crappy power supply called a raidmax--if that broke, it's possible that the test power supply, which has been incredibly trustworthy, wasn't powerful enough with 235w. I'll use my friends power supply tester the next chance I get. The ram is probably good. I have two sticks of kingston ram and wouldn't expect them to both go bad suddenly. The videocard may be broken. I'm not sure how that would effect the warning beeps from the PC speaker. Any ideas? If the power supply tests out okay, I guess I'll try a new CPU. |

Motherboard make/model processor make/model is there an onboard video port? can you take a picture of where you plugged the USB into the motherboard? Unlike a car, you can't just drop in a new part and fire it up. You need to install drivers for: Motherboard processor USB Video card

start with the piece of hardware that you installed just before the initial crash as noted above. becasue you aren't getting any sounds from the motherboard it is one of two probems: your psu or your motherboard. the fact that you aren't getting any warning beeps from your board indicates its mostlikely the board. even with a bad cpu you should still get feedback from the board. when you start it do you even get anything from bios? if not, sounds like the board is dead, but i wouldn't rule out the cpu either though.

The PC speaker works fine.
It will make a warning noise on the first board if there is no memory on the board. Everything is disconnected, harddrives, CDdrives, USB, whatever. I'll hopefully borrow my friend's PSU tester today. If the video card were fried would the MB make some sort of warning noise? Maybe if it's partially fried, it works just enough to lock everything up. I don't know the MB model numbers off the top of my head. The first one is an ASUS A7V880. The other an ABIT NF7-something Using an Athlon XP mobile, overclocked to 2.4Ghz. Stress tested well, but I always questioned the quality of power from the PSU. The other CPU I tested with was an overclocked Duron (some crazy thing were you can use pencil graphite to change the clock speed.) Anyway, I'll let you know what happens. There's basically nothing I haven't tried with the stuff I have on hand. I have an old videocard that's made to run at a lower voltage, but I might just try it and see if anything happens. |

long beep like missing RAM sound mis-configured card..... starts normally no picture http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us there's your support page for that board I'd download the manual, and all the available software/bios updates
