Dell Laptop Screen Cracked

My friend has a Dell laptop. She used it the other day. It was fine. Today when she opened it the screen was cracked! She lives alone. There is no way anything fell on it or was touched by anyone other than herself. No one has been in her apartment either. Plus she has no pets. The temp in her apartment has been at 70 degrees with no big changes in temp. Anyone hear or have a similar experience? It is only 10 months old. She is going to call Dell and see if there was a problem with her model. I'd love to hear from you guys.

At first I was like, "She dropped it." Then I realized she wasn't there when it happened, so I was thinking, "Oh, something fell on it." After that thought was squelched, I thought "Oh, it must have been a temperature change. She left it in the cold, and it got brittle and snapped when it got warm again."

Since you seem to believe none of those possibilities are in fact possible, however, I can't think of a reasonable explanation. If it truly just spontaneously cracked, Dell should fix it for you. Unless they've had the same problem with other computers, however, I think the chances of her convincing them that she didn't do anything to make it crack are slim to none. I hope that she can convince them.

I don't believe Dell will fix it for free or under warranty because they have to assume there was abuse, intentional or otherwise. Screens just don't magically "break".

I had a regional sales rep drop his laptop from a few inches above the ground and the screen broke. The replacement parts for me to put a new screen on the laptop cost around $450 or so. Not too bad considering the overall price of the laptop.

The Dell Parts and Upgrades phone number is 800-357-3355, at least thats what I have in my contacts list.

Thanks guys. I feel like something fell on it. I can't think of any other possible explanation. I feel so bad for her. It was her Xmas present to herself last year.

Dell has some kind of accidental service plan coverage that you can purchase when you buy a system from them. Have her check and see if she got that.

actually I have heard of this, though it's far more common with palmtop screens than laptops. If it's installed slightly wrong or the tolerances in its manufacture are slightly wrong stresses can build up and crack the screen. It's rather difficult to prove your case however.

I've had this with my ASUS MyPal PPC. I was baffled when I saw the broken screen. No guarantee, bacause they didn't believe me. Very annoying.

I have not heard about this at all. However, if (and only if) you have complete care, Dell will probably not replace this one. Bendsley is right. It cost about $450 for a LCD display. What model is it? I have a couple of XGA 15.1" for Latitude that I can sell you a lot cheaper. Send me a message if you want it and give me a price.

check e-bay for screens, you can sometimes get stripped laptop shells that are only missing the cpu and stuff for around 200, and you can get screens alone for about 100ish...

someone i knew dropped their dell latitude and ruined the screen, i ended up buying a replacement screen for $110 on ebay, buying it from dell would have costed her about $400 to $500
