Mounting an AMD Atlon 64 CPU with Artic Silver

I'm building my first computer right now and when my mother board and CPU came in I plugged it all in together and it didn't boot at all. Nada. Nothing. No POST, no beeps, no signal, etc. So I RMA'd the MoBo and I should be getting a new one tomorrow or Thursday.

Assuming my CPU does work tomorrow (which is a wild off chance since all signs are now pointing to a dead CPU) would the Artic Silver 5 work as a long lasting set up to use (basically can I just use the Artic Silver and not worry about it) or will I need to check it, see if my computer boots, then replace it with a thermal pad of some sort ASAP?

I'm aware that this will void the warranty on the processor, but it'll basically save me al ot of effort in the end to do it this way, so, any thoughts?

-Sorry this post is kinda hard to read I guess, but for some reason my brain's not working 100% right now, so things aren't quite flowing for me-

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Thermal paste will last awhile, but will dry out eventually.

As for your mobo/chip problem... it could be anything. Have you put a box togther before? I only ask because there can be lots of reasons for what you described to happen.

Normally when I have that type of issue, I take everything back apart.

1) Take the mobo out, set it on your desk (assuming you dont have a metal desk).
2)Plug the power supply in, make sure the cpu, cpu fan, and ram are in (and video card if there is no onboard video). If it still doesn't boot, then you have a problem.
3) If it does boot, then put the mobo back in the case and boot. If that doesnt work, you might have a riser in the wrong place, which can short the board out (this CAN harm the board, but I haven't had it happen yet).
4) Add 1 card in at a time until you have a full booting system. Then plug your HD's, CDROMs and anything else in one at a time, testing to see if your system boots after each new piece is added.

I just have the risers in the place that they work to put the screws in, so I dont' see much option there.

On the matter of it drying out is what I was looking for.

The AMD website's pretty asstastic, so it wasn't much help, but basically you gave me the answer I was looking for along with about an hour googling for an answer.

I'll try that tomorrow - A wooden or plastic table would work, right? I'm going to try to install most of it on that instead of in the case on the chance that it doesnt' work and I've got to replace stuff again, it's easier to not have to re-do everything.

Don't wear wool socks and tap dance while handling the motherboard.
Place the anti-static bag the motherboard came in on the table and put the MB on it.

In other words, be careful not to static damage anything.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking but you do have a cpu fan right?...I seem to be getting the impression you don't...and that is bad....

Most new case should come with a small speaker or the Mobo should come with one. Plugging in the cpu, one stick of ram and the cpu fan. Also connect the system speaker to the motherboard if not already connected. Motherboards these days tend to use sounds as a way to inform builders what problems there are if they don't come with onboard video.

The manual should tell you what each beeps mean when you start it up by shorting out the switch. If I'm not mistaken, one stick of ram will result in a overclock problem if you have asus motherboards but I wouldn't know about other brands...

My stuff gets in today, so hopefully I'll have a working computer. If not, it's off to Athlon with my processor.
