I implore you...almighty geeks!
Okay - I come to ask assistance from the geeks.
I have a hpzt1155 notebook with a spot for a wireless card - and I just so happen to have a card!!! I also have a place on my campus where I work and can get wireless. Problem: The other day I was sitting, with the comp, and an inquiring idiot wanted to know what type of card I used and pulled it out while I was on and using it. I poped it back in immedietly but now cant for the life of me get IE to run the registration page so I can log back on. It is like ...the internet is there....and the card is working properly (I checked) - but the two are not talking through the school server somehow. I had two friends do something or other to it in DOS. I couldnt tell you cause I dont know DOS. They said they didn't know what was going on. So - it is not earth shattering - the laptop just doesnt go to work then - but it is irksome. Anyone know what could have happened? |

I would imagine that the card has lost it's address... ...if you're using Windows XP, in the bottom right hand corner you may find a small icon with two computers. You can just as easily go to start, control panels, network, then choose the wireless connection, and right-click, repair.
Your computer will then, assumingly, through DHCP get its correct addresses. From there you can go back to your registration page and continue normal use. In DOS, I'm assuming that they tried to release and renew the IP address, but were unable to do so because your machine is set to default it's network connection to your Ethernet rather than the Wi-Fi. -SF |

ummm - yeah that sounds rather close.
I tried to repair it but it said it could not finish the repair job.... It was funny - my friend who tried to fix it - very level headed guy, nice, engaged to a wonderful woman, was muttering words I dont think anyone has ever heard him say. My little comp did that.....*sigh*

This is one of those things that would require a little hands-on time rather than giving you advice.
For us to go through it step by step would take a lot of your time and essentially be a class in basic networking, except in a bad order with lots of teachers shouting differnt things. Go back to basics. Do what you did to get it working the first time you ever used it. Possibly even uninstalling the drivers and any software that came with it. When you insert the card, does it make a "Doo - Dooot" sound? (lol - yeah I know, glad we're not talking cars: vrrrm-vrrrm vs brrrrum brrrum ) That sound indicates a usb or PCMCIA card being installed. If it doesn't (and the sound is turned up) then your pc is not detecting the hardware. If it does, check the little icon in the taskbar near the clock that looks like a laptop card device. There may even be a little 'speech bubble' with a tip on what to do next. Click on either to get some more info on what the device is and report back to us. While the card is out, write down the card details and tell us what brand and model it is. |

Then you'll get it all working and connect to the net only to find a new worm has exploited an IE vulnerability and turned your notebook into a vegetable and you can only cure it with a complete reinstall of windoze...

HA! I am ahead of all you guys!
I use IE for some apps - but mostly firefox (they are competing for main browser at the moment) It does make the fun "hardware detected" sound There is no way in hell I am going to buy a Mac - I have had traumatizing expirences. I havnt had the time to uninstall and reinstall again - that is about the only thing I have not done And yes, the computer is plugged in. My battery is to crappy to last more than two minutes without its powersource.

My advice, go into control panel -> system. Then click the hardware tab, then click device manager. In the device manager click the + next to network adapters then right click on the wireless cards name in that list and select uninstall. Windows shopuld ask if yoru sure, then tell you you need to reboot probably. reboot and it should redetect the card, from there act as if you just installed it for the first time. Good luck!

If Firefox and IE are in competition, let me repost my "exhaustive research" on memory usage between the two:
Okay, IE uses 25mb EACH window (same TFP pages across the 3 IE windows as the 3 fox tabs, mind you.) maximized, and freshly opened. Right off, that's 50mb more than the fox, to do the same thing. Minimized the IE windows are hanging at 2,824k, 2,556k, and 2,656k. Let's maximize them again. They all maximized to about 9.5mb/each. Roughly 30mb to do what firefox is taking 18 to do, at this first minim/maxim cycle. Minimize them again, we're down to 1.2mb, 1.25, and 1.1mb. Maximize them again. Now: 7.9, 8.25, 8.64mb. Firefox is holding the same three pages in tabs at 16.03mb. I just opened another instance of firefox, another window, and its memory usage is only 21.3mb for 3 tabs in one window, and google in a new window. 4 IE windows are costing me: 17.2, 24.5, 24.6, and 24.8mb all freshly opened. Now I'll do the same with firefox. Well, there's really no comparison here. I've got 7 tabs open in one firefox window. Five TFP forums, including this edit post window. Two comics I check every day, and another window on google.com. Firefox is displaying all that using 38.9mb. IE took 91.1mb to display 3 TFP forum pages, and google, across 4 windows. Let's see what I have to do to make firefox use 91.9mb. This is silly. To make firefox use 92.2mb (the closest I could get to IE's 91.9mb from the previous example) I had to open: One firefox window with 15 tabs (each one displaying real pages. I opened all the comics I read, my bank's page, my 401k, Fark, Slashdot, a few pages on the TFP). AND, yes, there's MORE!! Another firefox window with 13 tabs, displaying everything from Target.com, to Newegg.com. That's TWO firefox windows, with a total 28 tabs to equal what IE uses in 4 windows. Just for shits, here goes 28 IE windows, each displaying Google.com's homepage (which I'd think doesn't take much memory to display.): (OH!! BTW, when I minimized my two firefox windows with all those tabs, it dropped to 9mb used. One remaximized to type this, 31mb. Onward...) Well, IE used between 16.2 and 17.9mb for each IE window. Let's call that 17.05mb a window, to be fair. We end up with IE sucking down 477.4mb to keep 28, maximized, windows open. Score: Firefox, 2 windows, 28 tabs total: 92.2mb. IE, 28 windows total:477.4mb. That solves that question for me. I hope someone found this amusing!
