I called PAC Bell (SBC global) and they told me that my modem had to be 5 feet from my computer and that they were updating their user database. The database has been changing since last week, and my ping has changed in the last 12 hours. I wish they would just cut through the trash and explain why my internet connection is not working. I would be less irate if they simply explained the problem and gave me an ETA on when it will be fixed. Anyone know of a level 2/3 SBC/PAC Bell tech monkey who can assist me in finding my connection problem? /is just upset because he can't play UT2004 now and the daily show is a re-run EDIT: WEEEE. I was just told that pinging yahoo.com and pinging the IP of yahoo.com will have different results. I really don't see how one akami server will be faster than any other, but the SBC tech people seem to have different beliefs. ALSO, why must SBC outsource to people with broken english ?

A DNS request does not increase your ping time.
The "ping" doesn't start until it actually sends an ICMP packet to the server in question (and the server answers you). The DNS request only goes to your (hopefully local) DNS server to determine the IP address to send the ICMP packet to. In short, I fully believe that they are screwing nanofever over. I would tell them flat out that their telephone scripts will not work, that nanofever knows a bit about networking, and that he wants a level 2 technician (or the supervisor of the person he is talking to). Don't put up with their tomfoolery. Let's not forget that Yahoo! most likely does have content servers from Akamai at different locations on the Internet, so your best bet is to find out one specific IP address (or a few) and ping them; DNS isn't going to help you in this case because their DNS servers are most likely hacked up to send you the IP address of the theoretical closest physical server to your location.

Update: My pings from my modem to local CO box (first hop) have been wildly changing during the night. The first hop pings spiked at about 200 and then went down to about 30 (normal) sometime during the night. I have no idea what they were doing with their local network to degrade its performance so much. I'm betting that an SBC tech mis-configured something locally and had to fix it during the night. I can only hope that who ever made the mistake had to go into work to fix it instead of fixing it remotely.
Also, trying to explain the difference between bandwith and latency to a level one tech person has got to be some kind of punishment devised in the lowest circles of hell.
