Networking problems
Ok my next problem tonight is a networking issue.
I have an AMD Athlon xp 2500+ with an Asus A7N8X-X m/b and a HP laserjet 3330 printer/fax/copier plugged in to the serial port on my rig which is running Winxp home SP1. I have to use serial because I dont have firewire. I also have 2 laptops, a compaq Evo N800c and a Dell Latitude both running win2k SP4. I have already enabled "share" on all the cpus for the printer. I am having difficulty printing from either of the laptops atm. The error is not specific either, just sez that there was an error printing the doc. Secondly, I can't remember how to access the other cpus from this one. i.e. when I go to network connections, and click the other cpus, it prompts me for a username and password. I swear I cant remember what to put there. Who's username, whos password? Do I make new ones? Anyway, any help with either of these would be greatly appreciated Thank you in advance. |

You put the username and password of a user with appropriate access on the computer you're connecting to.
As for the printer sharing, do you see the printer on the other two computers? Do you have appropriate authentication rights to print?

I have the same problem, but I know my passwords and all. How do I make it so that I don't need to enter a username/password in order to access the comp.
In my case, my roommate is trying to acces my computer through the network. He needs a user/pass and I want to disable that. I can get to his without needing a user/pass. I have Wink2k, btw. And he has XP Home. |

On each computer, pick a folder, right click it and share it. Did name all your computers? Make sure they all belong to the same workgroup. Are you running wired or wireless network? What router are you using? I have wireless at home, PC is wired via Cable modem/router. My notebook and a second PC are connected wirelessly. I can see/access files/print from any of the networked PC. It's probably quicker if you search "home networking" in Google.

Okay, sorry for the short post, but I had just spent two hours trying to get this damned thing working and I was a little too torqued off to write a long post. I am connected with a wire to a Linksys router.
I have set up shared folders, etc, and done everything to allow someone to log onto my computer. My problem lies in that when the person on the XP box tries to access PETER [my computer name], a box pops up asking for user/pass. Despite my using the correct password, it never works. This brings me to this question: should I be using PETER\Administrator [the correct user/pass for the computer to be accessed] as the user/pass, or should I be using something else? I am pretty sure I should be using PETER\Administrator, but it never works. In my Local Security Settings I have all the appropriate things set, but it still doesn't work. Should I use PETER\Guest as the username? Also, if I set Guest logins as enabled [after right clicking My Computer -> Manage -> Local Users and Groups -> Guest -> uncheck "Account is disabled"], when I try to log into the Win2k comp from the XP comp, I get the following error: "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer." Does that error mean that the problem lies in the computer trying to do the accessing [has XP], or the computer to be accessed [has Win2k]? I have tried various other changes in different settings, but it always comes back to this damned problem whenever I have Guests enabled: "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer." I'm pretty sure if I can make this go away I will be fine. EDIT: I have tried adding different Users and all that, but I can never get the username right.. If I have added a user to my Win2k comp [the comp to be accessed], what do I put as the username? Do I put PETER\*created username* or do I put KYLE\*created username* ? Or just the username, leaving out the name of the computer? KYLE being the computer doing the accessing, the XP comp. Last edited by Carn; 01-14-2005 at 09:19 PM.. |

You do NOT need to put the computer name in the user/password field.
As long as both computers are on the same network(domain/workgroup), this is how I do things: computer 1 is the one that you are using computer 2 is the one that you are trying to access option 1: a) on computer 2, setup a user/password that is the SAME as the one on computer 1 b) Grant proper permissions c) once everything is setup properly computer 1 should be able to access computer 2 with no problems option 2: a) on computer 1, when you try to access computer 2 and get the user/pass dialog, enter in the user/pass for Computer 2 and you should be ok. b) you should now be able to access computer 2 from computer 1 if the user/pass is correct Now, if you still have problems after the above, please piost and we can try to figure out if either a) I missed/botched the instructions or b) you have other issues that need to be resolved. Notes: because of wacky name resolution issues I also have ipx/netbios running on my network, and this could possibly cause other differences in what i've said. |
