Suggestions and feedback on a site...
Disclaimer: This is not a cry for help and prior permission was granted to link to this site by the Halx himself.
I am currently taking a web development class at school. My project is to create a personal home page. It has come out fine and has been well received by my professor. Not to brag, but it is the best one of the class. OK, Im bragging! What I am asking from the techies around here is for some feedback on what kinds of things I might be able to incorporate to send the site over the top for a begining web design class. My mission is to come to class evey week and have something thats going to blow the professor/class away. If any one has any suggestions on resources to look up or any constructive criticism, by all means share. By the way, I am using MS Frontpage 2003. Just remember that this was created by a beginner but I am thirsty for knowledge! And without further ado, (insert drumroll here) : "my site" |

At first I thought this was a good start for a beginner in HTML, but then I saw you are using Frontpage. Anyone who can drag and drop can make a webpage then. I'm surprised yours is the best in the class if you are using Frontpage. Frontpage requires no skills at all But, you wanted some constructive criticism, so Drag & Drop your way to perfection using these suggestions
Take out the blue text on the hyperlinks; it makes my eyes hurt! Take out ALL of the animations, they are super cheesy. Make a side bar to put the links at, instead of being at random parts of the page. Put some graphics in there, but not too many. Take out the scrolling "fear" thing. Cheesy No offense, but I can't believe a "web development class" at your school is letting you use Frontpage! That's not how to make webpages, that's how to make AOL pages I'd tell the teacher to drop the bullshit and break out the tags. Take everything I've said with a grain of salt. It's my constructive criticism, not my bashing. EDIT: Man I've fucked this thread up. Mods, delete that last post. I tried putting in some Style Sheet code to show this guy how to do it, and it applied it to the whole page. Sorry

Oh, I almost forgot, if you want to add something awesome, put the following HTML after the <title> </title> part in the HTML code itself:
<style type="text/css"> a:link { color : #C2E1F4; text-decoration : none; font-family : verdana; font-size : 16px; } a:visited { color : #FFFFFF; text-decoration : none; font-family : verdana; font-size : 16px; } a:active { color : #FFFFFF; text-decoration : underline; font-family : verdana; font-size : 16px; } a:hover { color : #87CEFF; text-decoration : underline; font-family : verdana; font-size : 16px; } .text{ font-family : verdana; font-size: 16px; color : #C2E1F4; } </........style> It's called a style sheet. Your links will be awesome now! They will change colors and have underlines when you do a mouse-over and all kinds of shit. Check it out

First, refer to Strong Bad for web site advice.
http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail51.html When done with that, remove all the animated Gifs, kill the frames and begine with an idea of layout instead of content. Dreamweaver is a good alternative to Frontpage that meets all WWW standards (Frontpage does not). Approach this from a graphic design standpoint. How do you want to present your information is as important from a design perspective as what you present. How you chose to present it makes or breaks you. A poor presentation will loose the attention of your audience before you've said a word. Some things to keep in mind: - It's easier for the human mind to read black on white text or white on black text. Adding color can throw an entirely new meaning into your presentation. Pick at most three colors or tones and keep with them for consistency. -Of the two, white on black is scientificly proven to be easier to read. -Socialy, we are used to navigation of a site occuring at the top or left of the page. Even newspapers know and employ this by placing the more dominant news in on the left side, and using the right for local writers. *Hmmm, i have to go, but I'm going to edit back in to this post later to finish it.*
