OK, so I just finished emerging Gentoo/X/KDE. The problem is, when I try to start Xserver, I get a "no screens found" error. I have tried everything I can think of to get it working, and have run xf86config about 50 times with different settings, to no avail. I now need help. Ive spent 3 days getting this far on Gentoo, and its going to annoy the hell out of me if I get stopped now.

Note: I had it running earlier, but it only would run in 256 color mode in 640x480. I dont know what I did to make it stop, but even then, I couldnt get it out of that mode.

Is this the file generated by the config program or is this after you made any changes? Also do you have an nvidia graphics card?

XFree 86 put in a great tool builtin to the server, that does a pretty good job of auto-configuring. Just run: XFree86 -configure (your distro might have made xfree86 all lowercase, like debian does, but I just don't know what Mr. Robbins likes to do here)

It should autodetect your video card, and give you a reasonable config to start with. Give it a try, but be warned, it has a hard time with mice.

The file is generated by /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config. This is what was recommended to me by the Gentoo install documents. No, the video card is not a nVidia card, it is an intel 815 series onboard card that X should have no problem with.

Ill give that a shot and get back to ya'll. Does this place the config file in the correct location, or in a temp location for me to edit further and then copy in?

I'm pretty sure it places it in your home directory. You will want to run that program as root. After you do that, check out /root and look for a file called XF86Config-4.new or something like that.

Note, when trying that, Gentoo does NOT use XF86Config-4, it uses XF86Config. I never understood why distros held onto the old one and insist on calling the new one by a different name and I'm glad Gentoo doesn't.

Personally, I've always found the -config option to be a PITA and normally XF86Config works fine. It's a little more difficult for me to see the problem not knowing much about non-nvidia graphics cards. Are you SURE your refresh rates etc were all exactly correct? *shrug*

I'll keep thinking of possibilities. Been awhile since I've faced a no screens found error.

Try setting the default bit depth to 16 or 24.

Also, be sure the file is /etc/X11/XF86Config

You did not have to post the whole thing, just the non-comment non-blank lines.

In any case, a copy of XFree86.0.log (usually in /var/log) would be useful for debugging too. I'm not even sure where to look without seeing that.
