FX5600 GPU temperature
Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows the "normal", and maximum temperature for a Geforce FX 5600 videocard? My Asus 9560's GPU runs at 58 degrees celsius (134 F), while the memory runs at 41C (105F). Both are measured using the Asus Smartdoctor utility.
The reason I'm asking this: the fan makes loads of noise, and Smartdoctor can reduce this by reducing the fan RPM. BUT, out-of-the-box, it's set to maximize RPM when the GPU temperature is over 50C! Now, if the GPU can safely go up to, say, 65C, there's no stopping me from lowering the fan RPM. If 58C is already near the maximum, I can't... er... anyone? |

assuming that the temps are comparible to a CPU, 58C is pushing it, usualy 130F for a CPU is just about as much as it can take your running it at 136F which i think is to hot, as fot 65C is 150 F which is way to hot for a procesor to be, imho it is running to hot at 58C and my old GPU would over heat at 55C (geforce 3 ti200) so id say you need some better venting on your case, try to direct a fan over the GPU besides the built in fan.

I've got a Chieftec midi-case, with a P4 2.6c with stock cooler running next to the GPU. Then there's a case fan in the front, drawing in cool air. It *should* be enough to cool the case.
I tried a case fan above the videocard, blowing cool air right onto it (it was mounted in the side panel), but this didn't do much for the temperature. It'd go down to 57C... |

I talked to my colleagues that actually build computers for a living (I work at a computer store), and they say 58C is pretty normal for these cards. They can go up to 80C without much of a problem.
I don't like the idea of the card running too hot, but they know what they're talking about, and they say it's fine... (One also mentioned the olde FX5800, which could run up to 100C under full load.) |

100 C ? dear god thats hot, usualy you dont want a chip to get hotter then you can put your finger on for 10 sec, and um 100 C boils water, i dont think 100 C is healthy, get in touvh with nVidia and ask them.

no, 58C, 80C and 100C. We don't do Fahrenheit here.
And Dilbert: the 5800 was infamous for being utter crap. It had a "feature" to turn off the fan when in 2D mode, and only having it run in 3D mode. This was fine until someone ran the Windows 3D screensavers, which weren't 3D enough for the card. Result: oops, it crashed. Again. Last edited by Dragonlich; 01-20-2004 at 12:05 PM.. |
