need help from an expert(networking + XP)
Hi, i just bought myself a laptop with a 10/100 etherrnet thinger majigger.. and i need to either get it online (prefered) or on a home network so i can get stuff from the pc in my room (or both)
so heres the dillio my isp (adsl) gives me only 2 ips (and i cant just unhook one computer and swap cables because of the MAC adress.. we have my parents computer with win 98 and my pc with xp.. my laptop is also running xp.. so both will be the ntfs file system... (my parents pc doesnt need to be able to get stuff from this network.. currently we have a 4 port HUB not a router.. so we got the two working pcs online... but i need to add my laptop to this equation... how can i do this with the existing hardware? (i dont have money to buy a router) also file and print sharing is on both my laptop and pc.. both the same network name.. but i cant seem to find each other... thanks in advance |

try internet connection sharing.
as far as i know, it only needs 1 ip to connect 2 pc's to the net. kinda like a proxy server.

I don't think you can use ICS on a non dialup connection.
Find yourself a http proxy, and run this on the pc with intarweb. Then for the other computers, in the browsers, just add the proxy (ie the ip of the machine running the proxy server, and what port) into the browser they use. If you want to use things like ICQ and stuff like that, I think you're gonna need a SOCKS proxy. |

if it's windows xp, click on start.
u should see "My Computer" as being listed on the right side. now right click on "My Computer" from the start menu and chose "Show on Desktop"

so all you want to do is sharefiles and printers and internet?
if so all you need is a 10/100 cards for both computers. Your hub and 2 cat5 cables. Unless you want wireless. And if both computers are runing win xp its cake. step1: Use to setup home or small office network in my network connections. step2: on the main computer use the option of "this computer connects directly to the net. And others connection threw this." step3: And then it will ask you to select ur net connection. Select the one for ur adsl. It will also ask you for workgroup(has to be same on all computers on network) And computer name. Just name it what ever. But make sure you know what ur workgroup is called. It can be anything but has to be the same on all computers. It will ask you to create a network setup disk. Not realy needed. step4: then on ur second comp do the wizard. it should say that it found a net connection on what ever u named ur main comp. step5: Just let it do its stuff. And then set up shares and shit like you want it. Then you have a network between ur 2 computers.

hmm... well it wont let me do that,
all computers are hooked directly to the hub... not through another computer because my ethernet adapters all only havbe the one plug.. so it is saying i need a network conection aswell as as an internet con nection... i am very stumped... i was hoping it could do some tunneling stuff like my gamecube did to play with warppipe |

if you go into network connections is there one there for ur adsl(im not very familar with adsl) connection? And is ur NIC install correctly? And what does adsl connect to ur computer with? i have cable and it uses usb or ethernet. i use usb and then use the 2 usb's on my computers to share the net. Only draw back is main comps gotta be on. But it aint that bad.

you have my stumped bro. Im sure someoen else can help you. Im not sure why it wont let you run the home or small office network wizard. And i dont know why the computers are not showing up in my network computers. If they are all connected correcly and on the same workgroup then they should show up.

This sounds like two different problems to solve.
Problem 1 seems to be connecting to the network you've got set up. Now, I'm no expert and I'm sure there is someone here who knows a helluva lot more about this than me, but here's what I'd do. First, I'd check the physical connection itself. Is the ethernet cable the right kind? Are the indicators lights on for both the network card and the hub? If you're still not sure you could test connectivity using ICMP and 'ping' the desktop with the laptop and vice versa. Next, I'd double check the parameters under the network properties. I think, and again I'm no expert, that only 'file and print sharing' has to be turned on to connect to the network only. I don't think any of the other parameters matter, but I'd double check them anyway just to make sure that everything is simpatico. You can use the aforementioned 'wizard' to set the laptop to connect to just the network (it's under the "other" option) and that should set things right. After all that, if it still doesn't work....well, I just don't know, but I'll certainly think about it. As for sharing the Internet connection with ICS. I think the computers have to be directly connected for ICS to work right. Either the XP desktop has to sit between the hub and the modem and be a gateway for all or it has to sit between the laptop and the hub. I mean to say, I don't think you can use ICS through a hub. Although again, I'm no expert and I could be stunningly wrong. That being said, since the XP desktop connects through the hub the easiest fix would be to slap another ethernet card into the desktop and connect the laptop to connect through it. Unless you have an alternative way for the XP desktop to connect directly through to the modem (for instance, my DSL modem has a USB connector) I know that was long and probably won't solve the problem completely, but maybe something in there can serve as a jumping off point and direct you to the solution to your problem. Hope it goes well and let us know when you fix it

IF you are not using a router...which is the easiest way to resolve the issue, you need to remeber that if you are simply using a Hub the 1st machine to boot will obtain the IP address you provider is giving you.
