2 part question about DivX/MPEG
First off, thanks to everyone for sharing their knowledge on this forum, it's nice to have a place where i can get intelligent answers for my many questions.
Second off, is there a way to create a digital video file with chapters that are skippable like a dvd? I am not really partial to either DivX, Xvid or MPEG, I think they all are great and suck equally. I understand it is possible to create a file that BSplayer opens simultaniously(?) with the DIVX file that gives it chapter info. The only problem is I don't really like BSplayer, I can't stand players with a separate control panel, i like it all in one window, I use ZoomPlayer. Is it possible to create a DVD or SVCD MPEG file with chapters and will the player recognize them and how do I go about doing it? I am using Vegas 4.0 for creation, and you can create markers that exist in the media file, but they don't seem to be recognized as chapters. I would like to create a huge comp of a bunch of clips and be able to skip among them. Part 2- I seem to be getting this strange effect with DivX files that I create where, while the file is playing (in a media player), if i try to skip to another part on the timeline, The current frame freezes in kind of a "tiling" effect but the motion of the part that I skipped to still plays, and it kind of morphs the frozen frame over it in some crazy colors. It's actually pretty tripped out, but I usually have to stop the file to fix it. It only seems to happen on the second time that i skip ahead in the timeline. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and does it have a name? Thanks. |

I know what you're talking about with the skipping problem; it's because it can't find (or isn't using) a keyframe. DivX stores information as keyframes every now and again (basically like a jpeg; just one frame stored as a picture). The other frames are stored as "differences" from the previous frame. If there aren't enough keyframes, Media Player only has the 'differences' to go by, and will apply them to whatever's showing. You probably need more keyframes (there's usually a setting for this) in your DivX. I have them every 10 seconds, and at scene changes - and don't tend to get this problem; I've certainly seen it on DivXs where keyframes are less frequent.

About the DVD, you will need a decient Authoring program to use chapters. Sonic DVD IT se is a common one, that I believe is fairly cheap. However if you know where you can get your hands on a copy of Adobe Encore or Sonic Reel DVD, those are extremely good authoring apps. I use both regulary and I can say both are amazing apps, I prefer Reel DVD but thats just because I have used it longer. I am sure that there is a way to get the DVD Files to play off your HDD, and if not then you might be limited as to what you can do with it, but I do know it can make Chapter marks and intro screens for DVDs, VCDs, and SVCDs so hopefully you know someone who could let u try these. good luck
