iPhone users... Jailbreak?
Anyone have experience with a jailbroken IPhone 4? I've wanted to try a few things, but I'm still not quite sure it's worth the risk. I'd really like to have access to tethering, but I'm not willing to go with the bandwidth caps and extra fees.

DO NOT JAILBREAK AN iPHONE!
If you don't have AT&T or verizon just leave it and get something else like a comparable android phone. The reason the iPhone has many fanboys is because it works marvelously on it's designated carrier. If you don't know anything about apple then know this, their products are not meant to be changed or customized in any way. Once jailbroken the iPhone will start lagging and behave in a shitty manner. It's gonna start throwing network reception, dropping calls in the middle of the street and skipping your music. It's just not worth the frustration for a couple more added apps. I do not recommend it. |

As usual, I have no idea what Xerxys is trying to say. My iPhone and iPad are jailbroken and work just fine, even better. It added a lot of functionality, including folders (before 4.0, and better now than the 4.0 folders), multi-tasking (better than 4.0's version), process manager, autodimmer, VNC, Remote Desktop, you name it. I'm not sure where "start lagging and behave in a shitty manner" comes from, unless you're intent on shilling Android over iPhone. I highly recommend it, and if you know your OS version I can tell you exactly how to do it. 3.1.2? 4.1?

Dude, I say all this from experience. The iPhone locked up numerous times, refused to run some apps that previously required a jailbreak in order to install, had crap battery life ... and all this AFTER I had it jailbroken. You know what, I figured it was a one time thing, so I restored it back to factory defaults then used my mom's insurance to get another one. Same thing.

I don't have a jailbroken iphone but I have a jailbroken ipod touch and it's about a million times better after the jailbreak.

OK Then. It might have just been me. But then maybe not. So what y'all (The both of you) are saying is that you have no problems with your jailbroken apple products? I'm actually keen to know how Jinn jailbroke his.
I used the redsn0w.exe package to extract and install an already prepared ipsw file I had downloaded. That worked the first time but with the consequences I outlined in my earlier post. My friend currently on T-mobile with an iPhone still has the very same issues. I also jailbroke three other iPhones and wound up cooking one of them. I tried everything but for the love of me could not have it unlocked and jailbroken so I was forced to return it to factory defaults. So a total of six iPhones not working properly with me as the common denominator then maybe *I* am the problem. But maybe not. Jinn, tell me how you jailbroke yours. |

Back before 4.0 hit I had used the Pwnage tool or whatever from the Dev-Teams blog page. I upgraded to 4.0 since there wasn't a jailbreak right away for it, and then to jailbreak it again all I did was go to jailbreakme.com on my ipod and let it do its thing.

I mainly want to have tethering on an unlimited plan. I've even kicked around the idea of getting a second line and having the phone dedicated for tethering. I'm on a family talk plan, so for the 25 dollar a month charge it would cost for the tethering alone, I could just add a line.
With my situation, I use 90% of my monthly bandwidth on the 7 night shifts I work a month. Carrying a second phone to work on night shift is no effort at all. |

Using tethering without actually *paying* for it is against the EULA, and both Tmob and ATT have made it clear that if they believe you're tethering (excessive data usage) they'll charge you for it.
In this situation, I'd opt for doing the correct thing and paying for what you're actually doing, instead of using software to steal it. As for how I jailbroke, its been a while but I believe I used ultrasn0w for 3.1.1 and blackrain for 3.1.2 on my iPhone, and then the tether-free jailbreak for 4.0.1 when it came out. My iPad was GreenPoison. I'm curious about the lock-ups, etc. My phone has never locked. I've had it restart SpringBoard in Safe Mode after I put some prototype MobileSubstrate apps on. I think the biggest thing to do is make sure any Cydia/Rock/etc apps you install are actually going to work on your device / OS version. Installing unsupported apps could cause crashes, I suppose, but I never did.
