New monitor setup
I've been working with a 17" LCD and a 15" CRT for quite a while as my monitor setup for my two PCs. Well, my video card died on my linux box so the 15 became a dead weight in the water till I fix my linux box. Well, about a week and half ago my LCD turned green on me and started to flash in and out of focus. I knew what that meant, my LCD was about to die. I didn't have the cash on me to buy a new one, but I had a little credit left on my CC and so I bought a new Acer 24" LCD (for $200 bucks free shipping on newegg). While I was waiting on the LCD to arrive my friend told me she was getting a laptop and didn't use her PC anymore. She has a 22" LCD that was collecting dust on her desk and would be put into storage when her laptop got there. Well, after some bartering I traded an old digital camera that I never use for her LCD. Now, I have a 24" and a 22" setup to my gaming PC.
I'm in love with my new setup. I now have an extended desktop for the first time in my life and I don't know how I could have lived without it. This is a pure bragging thread. Nothing more, nothing less. My new setup, don't mind the desk, it's shitty and will be the next thing replaced. |

Nice setup, I'm jealous even.
BTW why not use something like SecureCRT and run your linux box headless? Been using this for years personally, about the only time I ever use the keyboard/monitor hooked to a few of my nix box's is when my main pc is not available. |

Assuming windows, you use PuTTY to SSH into a *nix box.
Check this link. http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...t-filters.html This is a how-to I wrote for another site. I just posted it here due to this topic, since some elements of that topic coincide with this one. Instead of worrying about firefox and port forwarding (this is the local LAN, afterall), just set up the X11 forwarding bit, then run xming on your windows box (you just need to run the program to load the libs, nothing special) and then you can set up a remote X session from the linux box, through PuTTY. You'll have to set up a remote session config as well. I can't remember exactly how I did it, but google will tell you how real fast. ---------- Post added at 10:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:32 AM ---------- BTW, welcome to dual screen bliss I run a 19in normal aspect and 22in widescreen side by side.. Very nice.

Since we're bragging ... on my DAW I run three monitors. Two 19" and one 22" widescreen.
On my left are notes, manuals and other pdfs that I might need as far as reference material goes. In the middle (the 22") is "whatever I'm working on at the moment," tracks, consoles individual wavs or whatever. On my right are my transport control, any effects that I need to control and synth racks. It's all in storage at the moment though while I'm refinishing my garage. I don't know how I ever got by with one monitor. |
