Overclockers of the world... help!
System Specs:
AMD 2400+ Tbred ASUS A7N8X Delux 40,80 GB HD's CD-RW, DVD, FLOPPY Thermaltake Volcano 10+ Slim 1 512MB PC2700 DDR ram Geforce2 Ti(soon to be Geforce4 Ti4200) Im trying to overclock the CPU, but ive never done anything before in this area. Right now i have the FSB set at 400mHz and the multiplier at 10.5 giving me 2.09ghz. However, this is only a 100 mhz increase from the base setting. I feel I should be able to get more than this. Anyone who has the same setup can tell me what i should set it to? I havent messed with the voltages, but ive heard you need to? Any suggestions? Thx in advance! |

For a long time I used 15 x 147 for a CPU speed of 2.205GHz. I have the same CPU as you, but an MSI KT4 Ultra mobo. Everything ran fine, but I now use 15 x 135.2 because I couldn't tell a difference in speed and I figured it'd be best to run a little slower and cooler. BTW, at the time, my CPU never went over 45°C!

What you need to do is bring up the FSB and multiplier in small increments. If it's unstable, increase the voltage. Whatever you do, I wouldn't go over 50 degrees under load. To monitor temps, get motherboard monitor 5. (Just Google these programs). To test stablilty, get and run Prime95 for a few hours. www.overclockers.com has a few great tutorials.

Find out what stepping your processor is. There is some AMD Chips that overclock AMAZINGLY well, for instance. My friends system is running a 2100+ at a Barton 3200+ speed. His comp is destroying everything but a P4 3.0c w/ 800mhz FSB. This is of course after a lot of trial and error. Also if you want to gain performance from your CPU you have to look at your RAM. Your ram is only running at 333mhz, so if you up your FSB a lot you might not notice a lot of difference. However, if you just put some agressive memory timings on, 2,2,2,5 (if your ram can do that) then you might notice a big improvement.
You should aim for the best (I call it) performance / danger level I do not like to see my CPU get above 55, EVER even if I was to run a CPU benchmarking program for 2 days straight. 50 can damage a CPUs life, but I figure I will be upgrading in a matter of 1 - 1.5 years anyway. Oh and finally one thing you should watch out for (just dont flip if it happens) is that you will probably have to reset the CMOS a few times while trying new settings. Dont take a fit if this happens cuz 99% of the time all you need is to change the jumper on the mobo and your good to go again. And finally USE A GOOD THERMAL COMPOUND If all you did was slap the CPU on with a pad or some cheap stuff, take it off, lap the heatsink, clean the proc and get a tube of Artic Silver 3, but u probably already did this anyway :P Gluck with your OCing. |
