new computer parts, comments, suggestions?
well my old beast of a computer has finally died, pretty sure its a mobo issue, but its old enough that I'm gonna buy new instead of repairing it.
I've picked out parts, if a part is missing I am probably recycling it from my old machine, secondary hard drive, optical drive. I want an nvidia video card because of the better linux driver support. In the past I've always gone with AMD processors, but a friend was really raving about the intel i've got picked out, and I havnt really kept up with the technology too much and dont know what AMD would be best. I dont do much gaming, but dont want to limit myself in that respect, I tend to do stretchs with no gaming then game for a while... I've got about $1300 to spend and here is what I've picked out, I'd like to get comments, and better options for the money if possible. I second your friend; the Conroes are fucking amazing. I build a 6400 system and it's smokin. Plus, you can overclock the hell out of them.
I really don't see any glaring problems with your setup, except the fucking UGLY case. I'd spend the money on a better PSU and case, not together. Typically integrated PSUs are low quality. One other note: find out the Voltage for your motherboard. Conroe boards are notorious for being incompatible with high voltage ram, and the Corsair ram is 2.1V.

would the non dominator version be better, it runs at 1.9V instead of 2.1V
heres a link to it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590 the mobo I picked should have all fully adjustable settings, so I could adjust it to the right settings... not really sure how much benefit is derived from the more aggressive timings. do you have another case recomendation? I'm tired of my giant, heavy, watercooled antec... want something smaller and quiet, a buddy of mine got that one and has been raving about how nice it is just noticed this Quote:
so maybe I should be looking for ram that meets those requirements exactly.

I picked that hard drive because its smaller, I like to have my OS and programs on one drive and everything else on my big storage drive so I can format without losing everything.
there is really almost no ram that meets the exact requirements mentioned for the motherboard... newegg only has 4 or 5 offerings. I'm thinking I'll go with my original choice and figure the mobo will be able to be adjusted to match the rams settings, since its a pretty high end overclocking type board.

Looks good to me. I'd pick out a nice Lian-Li case with an Enermax 400w+ PSU though if you have that big of a budget.
