OSX and XP Dual Boot? - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Hi all, I was thinking of buying one of those MacBook Pros that can dual boot OSX and Windows XP and I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with that at all. I have a laptop and a desktop and I was thinking of getting one of these as a desktop replacement. I play a lot of games but I think these things could handle that right?

2.0 GHz Core Duo
256 Meg Radeon X1600
1 Gig of ram.

I know the ram is low but that can be upgraded.

Does anybody have any experience with this and if so how do you like it? I am mostly a PC person, but I do realize the pros and cons of PC and the pros and cons of Macs, so both would be very useful to me.

just got mine yesterday, installing XP on it now. loaded world of warcraft in osx just to see how it ran and it was smooth as butter. Its supposed to perform even better under XP. People are reporting that doom3 runs very well with settings turned up under XP on those things.

Boot Camp has the analysts in a frenzy. Just what is Apple up to? Are they moving OSX to the PC platform? Are they thinking of discontinuing OSX altogether?

I haven't had any first-hand experience yet, but everything I've heard is positive. I say go for it.

Hey, it's a bargain! Compare to:

Processor: 8MHz 16/24/32bit hybrid
RAM: 128KB - soldering iron upgrade to 512KB
HD: n/a
Video: 9" B&W 512x384. Direct memory mapped. CPU as GPU.
Floppy: Single internal 400KB, expansion port for external though they're not available.
Modem: No.
LAN: No.
Ports: 2x serial (230Kb/s potential, but initally used for impact printer & modem)
Keyboard: Yes. Numeric keypad extra.
Mouse: Yes. One button.
OS: (Big name for a bunch of traps) Finder 1.0g (? it's been a while)

All for $2495 in 1984 dollars.
Development system: Another $10K, and don't ask.

Jobs gave 50% discounts via Own-a-Mac but gross margins were quite different in those days.

And yes, we walked 10miles barefoot to school each day.

Please please please be careful when installing Boot Camp - specifically, make sure you take a FULL BACKUP before installing. It is still BETA software, and as such Apple will not provide any support if it goes wrong and eats all your data.

There have been a number of people who've rushed ahead and suffered the consequences.

Personally, I'm very excited by the potential to have an OS X/Windows box - but will wait for the technology to mature a little before I go diving in...

I think that those are overanalyists. The simplest explanation is the most likely one.

Boot Camp takes away the argument of potential switchers who say "I'd like to try a Mac, but I really have to be able to run this specific piece of Windows-only software".

Not to mention several hacked up solutions debuted a couple of days before Bootcamp. These generally featured tedious installation procedures and limited functionality - in short a non-Mac user experience. It was really the only move Apple could have made. Personally, this solves a tremendous number of issues for me, including the fact that I can now run Access and Outlook on my iMac. I'm thinking about getting a Macbook Pro as an "anything/anywhere" machine. That wasn't on my mind before this news, and I'm a solidly converted mac user!

See that's what I am, I like Macs and everything but I do need to use stuff that is Windows only at this point. It makes me really happy to be able to use both on one machine. I will probably look into buying this next week.

Apple is indeed providing support to Boot Camp users. There was some initial confusion on this issue but Apple, true to form, came through with the "right decision."

I am one such potential switcher, and I'm determined that, next time I have a couple G's to rub together, they're going to Apple. I am a former and future Mac zealot, but the last one I owned ran OS 8.

Well guys finally got a working copy of XP and got my laptop with bootcamp up and running.

I have the base 2ghz model macbook pro w/ 256 meg ATI card. I gotta say its damn nice. XP runs rediculously fast. I'm using XP simply for games, and this thing makes a great game machine. I loaded counter-strike:source, and Half-Life2 and they run beutifully and smooth with all the video settings cranked up high. Im impressed, I'm recommending this machine to everyone

Tried out world of warcraft on OSX and it ran great. Supposedly it runs better under XP because its optimized for DirectX, not OpenGL. When I get the chance I will be installing that on XP to check it out.

I love this damn thing.

Unless your using a mouse with your laptop you cant right click things. No right click support for the single button trackpad yet. This little utility fixes that.

check out the apple forums for more information..

seems like many of them (especially the earlier ones) have quite a few problems.. ie. buzzing noises, heat, quality, etc...

Would you guys recommend getting it from Apple directly? Because on Amazon there is no tax and there is a $150 mail in rebate. So it comes out much cheaper from Amazon than from Apple directly.

And also, can I use the same wireless hub I have now right? Or do I have to get a new one? It's a Linxsys set to WPA security

I love this thing! I just got it yesterday and I must say its amazing. I have not gotten any of the real heat issues or that whining noise that people say is common among these. It gets warm, but with whats in it and how silent it is, how could it not?

I just installed XP through BootCamp and it runs Windows flawlessly. Now to put some games on it, if I can find WoW.
