Emmitt Smith ready to retire? Yes
This is the third time I've had to edit this post due to Emmitt denying the initial reports, but it looks like Emmitt is finally ready to retire, a couple days later and perhaps a couple years too late.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_yl...v=ap&type=lgns As an Arizona Cardinals "fan", I enjoyed watching him play these past 2 seasons, especially this past season when he showed flashes of his former self. He'll leave behind some impressive stats as the NFL's all-time leading rusher with 8 Pro Bowls, 3 Super Bowl titles and a league MVP to his name. Where do you guys think he ranks among the best running backs of all time (Walter Payton, Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, OJ) if he were to retire now? I have to agree with your first statment, it IS a few years too late...
Being a Bears fan, I didn't really "want" him to break the all-time rushing yards record that Payton used to hold, but at least he's a classy guy and if it had to be someone, better a guy like him. Among the all-timers? That's tough... I'd say most of his stats are due simply to longevity, and the teams he was on... He isn't a flashy back, more of a grind-it-out type of runner... So, I honestly wouldn't rank him very high among the greats... still probably top 10 all-time, obviously he is/was VERY talented, just not as much of the individual talent as a Barry Sanders or Walter Payton. This is just my opinion though, obviously. I'm sure others feel differently. |

I still rank O.J. in the top five all time, simply because he played on such a shitty team.
But speaking of Emmit, I would place him in my top five all time as well. You have to give the man respect for even HAVING the longevity to get those records. A running back doesn't have the longest shelf life.

I can't believe that some people have already started calling him selfish because of the speculation that his retirement during the week of the super bowl. Did they say that Emmitt Smith was selfish? Come on people, he has to be one of the most selfless and wholesome people to play the game. Don't want to see him leave just yet, but even the best things have to end some time.

You have to put Jim Brown high on that list... only running back on that top list with more touchdowns than games played, and one of the few players over a couple of seasons to achieve that. have to respect the guy even tho he played for the browns. and i still have to give it to barry

yea, if you say OJ is up there because he played on a crappy team, then Barry is head and shoulders above OJ. I mean cmon...the lions? And even if he played on a better all around team, i think barry would be still one or two. If he hadnt have quit rather early too, i dont think there would have been much of an argument.
