I have to agree with your first statment, it IS a few years too late...
Being a Bears fan, I didn't really "want" him to break the all-time rushing yards record that Payton used to hold, but at least he's a classy guy and if it had to be someone, better a guy like him.
Among the all-timers? That's tough... I'd say most of his stats are due simply to longevity, and the teams he was on... He isn't a flashy back, more of a grind-it-out type of runner... So, I honestly wouldn't rank him very high among the greats... still probably top 10 all-time, obviously he is/was VERY talented, just not as much of the individual talent as a Barry Sanders or Walter Payton. This is just my opinion though, obviously. I'm sure others feel differently.
