My own computer rankings…
Okay, they're still in beta, but the results are intriguing.
There are strength of schedule and margin of victory components built into the scheme. There are no rewards for losses nor punishments for victories, tiny rewards for close wins against weak teams and huge rewards for beating the high and mighty. Here are the top 20. One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. They each bought a pint of Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |

I would be curious to see how it works out at the end of the year. I think that that would be the only true way to know if your formula is worth a crap. Right now, it looks like you are giving a HUGE benefit to teams that upset a higher ranked team. Does your formula take into affect teams that were ranked highly and then were found to be over-ranked? Does it lower the score of the teams that beat them after they fall out of the rankings?
I think that the best way to test a formula would be to apply it to a prior season and tweak it to get it right. Congrats on the hard work. Like I said, it will be interesting to see how it ends up at the end of the year. I totally agree with you for teams like Ohio State who continually barely edges mediocre teams, yet stays in the top of the polls. You show them at #10 which is more reasonable to me. |

Early season irregularities apparently plague everyone with systems that start at zero. Ken Massey (one of the BCS computer ranksters) quit publishing his early-season rankings due to all the hate mail.
Kansas is so high up because of the 22-point stomping of UNLV (3-1), with only an 8-point loss to a 2-2 Northwestern dragging them down. Buffalo (0-3) is currently #94 due to their losses being to 4-0 Iowa, 3-1 Connecticut, and 2-1 Rutgers. As the season progresses, UConn and Rutgers should start losing and Buffalo's ranking should head south accordingly. I'll due a run on last year sometime today and tweak accordingly. [Update: Last year's run is taking longer to do than I previously thought. I have made one adjustment already, and Oregon is now #4 instead of #1.] Last edited by RoadRage; 09-27-2003 at 09:10 AM.. |

Acutally, I think I like his better. ![]() Due to a modification on the calculations (ß2), Texas is now #33 instead of #39. I guess every little bit helps. Last edited by RoadRage; 09-27-2003 at 09:15 AM.. |
