My own computer rankings…

Okay, they're still in beta, but the results are intriguing.

There are strength of schedule and margin of victory components built into the scheme. There are no rewards for losses nor punishments for victories, tiny rewards for close wins against weak teams and huge rewards for beating the high and mighty.

Here are the top 20. Full list is at http://members.cox.net/wd40

3 Arkansas

32 Texas A&M

39 Texas

how about a lil more credit ;)
40 Kansas St

Hm...u also seem to have a razorback logo as avatar and arkansas is ranked #3. i'm sure that there is no correlation there.

regardless of my disagreement on the poll, i must congratulate u on the nice work done here.
+ for all the data input that you had to do.

good job.

At least Texas is ranked about right :)

I would be curious to see how it works out at the end of the year. I think that that would be the only true way to know if your formula is worth a crap. Right now, it looks like you are giving a HUGE benefit to teams that upset a higher ranked team. Does your formula take into affect teams that were ranked highly and then were found to be over-ranked? Does it lower the score of the teams that beat them after they fall out of the rankings?

I think that the best way to test a formula would be to apply it to a prior season and tweak it to get it right. Congrats on the hard work. Like I said, it will be interesting to see how it ends up at the end of the year. I totally agree with you for teams like Ohio State who continually barely edges mediocre teams, yet stays in the top of the polls. You show them at #10 which is more reasonable to me.

Hey, what gives. Why you gotta be hatin' on Texas, hehe. But seriously, how exactly do you make these calcs, because it seems that they are a little off from the generally accpeted public polls. Oh well, lets see how they change after this week.

The_Dude 09-24-2003 08:54 PM

Sorry to pick your rankings again, but I dont see any way that Kansas is ranked ahed of Texas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Colorado, Texas Tech and Baylor! (i have only listed big xii teams)

Kurant 09-24-2003 09:30 PM

Not sure how Miami is #9, but ok. =/

bundy 09-24-2003 10:47 PM

i wouldn´t mind Tennessee being higher up that list.

but what do i know, i´ve only been into this sport for about a month now.

Just curious, is Buffalo #117? That's how I'd establish credibility for the rankings...

Early season irregularities apparently plague everyone with systems that start at zero. Ken Massey (one of the BCS computer ranksters) quit publishing his early-season rankings due to all the hate mail.

Kansas is so high up because of the 22-point stomping of UNLV (3-1), with only an 8-point loss to a 2-2 Northwestern dragging them down.

Buffalo (0-3) is currently #94 due to their losses being to 4-0 Iowa, 3-1 Connecticut, and 2-1 Rutgers. As the season progresses, UConn and Rutgers should start losing and Buffalo's ranking should head south accordingly.

I'll due a run on last year sometime today and tweak accordingly.

[Update: Last year's run is taking longer to do than I previously thought. I have made one adjustment already, and Oregon is now #4 instead of #1.]

You think I've rigged it? Check this guy's poll out! http://home.earthlink.net/~ztarmstro...CFB/cfbase.htm

Acutally, I think I like his better. :D

Due to a modification on the calculations (ß2), Texas is now #33 instead of #39. I guess every little bit helps.
