What is "hooking up"?
I have a friend who often mentions "hooking up" with guys.
I've asked her about what hooking up is (and I have my own thoughts on it as well), but the definition has been a little obscure, and instead of pressing the issue with her, I figured I would ask here to see what you all thought it meant? What is "hooking up" in your mind? Is it sex? Almost having sex, but not quite? Something else? And furthermore, is it always considered to be a temporary relationship/meeting/fling or can it be more long lasting as well?

"Hooking up" usually denotes some kind of sexual activity took place in my mind.
The best definition I found on UrbanDictionary said this: Quote:

I've always been confused about this too. Here we say 'get with' or 'be with' (as in 'He got with her' and 'I've never been with him'). I think that's about the most boring euphemism ever. Anyway, to some people 'get with' means chatting up, to others it means kissing at a party, and to others (like me) it means full on sex. It's pretty frustrating to hear of a friend boasting about how he 'got with some chick' only to find out it means he chatted her up, or kissed her at a party.

When my female friends refer to "hooking up" with someone, it usually means they had some sort of spontaneous sexual activities with a random guy and have no clue where things stand, or they aren't interested in a relationship with them. "I got drunk and hooked up with this guy last weekend, and now he won't quit calling me."
Alternatively, hooking up can also be used to describe beginning a relationship with someone, as opposed to having simply having sex with them. "When did those two hook up?"

For ages it was as monkeysugar said: the start of a relationship. More recently (the last decade or so?) it's morphed to mean sex, usually casual.
I'm curious when others first noticed the shift? (wearing a full-body vocabulary rubber) |

I've always been a little nebulous about the meaning of "hooking up" also. Sometimes a friend will say "yo man, I hooked up with that chick at the party", then I ask him what he did and he'll say "you know make out, hook up whatever." In another instance it will mean some sort of sexual activity. However, I think if someone had sex with a person at a social gathering/party they will just say they screwed them. I've come to understand that hooking up entails more of like making out or possibly oral sex.
