What is "hooking up"?

I have a friend who often mentions "hooking up" with guys.

I've asked her about what hooking up is (and I have my own thoughts on it as well), but the definition has been a little obscure, and instead of pressing the issue with her, I figured I would ask here to see what you all thought it meant?

What is "hooking up" in your mind? Is it sex? Almost having sex, but not quite? Something else?

And furthermore, is it always considered to be a temporary relationship/meeting/fling or can it be more long lasting as well?

"Hooking up" usually denotes some kind of sexual activity took place in my mind.

The best definition I found on UrbanDictionary said this:
Quote:

1. To engage in romantic/sexual activity with another at a party/gathering.

Usually, one or both partners are under the influence of alcohol, or another judgement imparing drug. "Hooking up" usually involves little or no emotional attachment.

2. An exchange. To give/recieve/share an asset, or something of value, usually something that is tangible.

"Hooking up" is most commonly used in reference to the sale/exchange of illict drugs.
1. Sally is always hooking up with guys at parties.

2. Sally is hooking me up with some crack later this afternoon.

I would think the term "hooking up" involves no-strings-attached sex, or something of the sort.

I've always been confused about this too. Here we say 'get with' or 'be with' (as in 'He got with her' and 'I've never been with him'). I think that's about the most boring euphemism ever. Anyway, to some people 'get with' means chatting up, to others it means kissing at a party, and to others (like me) it means full on sex. It's pretty frustrating to hear of a friend boasting about how he 'got with some chick' only to find out it means he chatted her up, or kissed her at a party.

When my female friends refer to "hooking up" with someone, it usually means they had some sort of spontaneous sexual activities with a random guy and have no clue where things stand, or they aren't interested in a relationship with them. "I got drunk and hooked up with this guy last weekend, and now he won't quit calling me."

Alternatively, hooking up can also be used to describe beginning a relationship with someone, as opposed to having simply having sex with them. "When did those two hook up?"

i have always been adament about what hooking up is -- it is, for one, not making out. it is anything involving below the belt or a girls breasts (fully exposed).

At least as I know it, hooking up generally means sexual play without any kind of serious connection.

For ages it was as monkeysugar said: the start of a relationship. More recently (the last decade or so?) it's morphed to mean sex, usually casual.

I'm curious when others first noticed the shift?

To me it means casual sex. .

"hooking up" is sex, doesn't always mean it was casual sex. Here it can still mean the start of a relationship. Can only tell be context. "I hooked up with Jane, she is cool" vs "I hooked up with that slut in the blue shirt."

Sometimes I'll ask my buddies if they hooked up with some chick, and clarify to mean make out with her. I ussually clarify but I see it as meaning anything at all.

ntf 01-02-2005 02:28 AM

I have heard it used in some situations where it clearly meant no more than hanging out and other situations where it clearly meant sex. So I think it depends, you need more information to know for sure.

I always get confused when someone says they "hooked up" with someone else. I had always thought it meant sex. Every time I hear it now I ask what they mean by it. Same goes for to "get with."

hooked up to me is when you drag your car and you tires grip the track!

gotekix 01-05-2005 11:34 PM

I've always been a little nebulous about the meaning of "hooking up" also. Sometimes a friend will say "yo man, I hooked up with that chick at the party", then I ask him what he did and he'll say "you know make out, hook up whatever." In another instance it will mean some sort of sexual activity. However, I think if someone had sex with a person at a social gathering/party they will just say they screwed them. I've come to understand that hooking up entails more of like making out or possibly oral sex.

Asta!!

eyeswimslow 01-06-2005 01:11 AM

I've always thought of it as two drunken people just fooling around, not necessarily having sex, but most likely doing some sexual activity.

cdog90260 01-06-2005 10:25 PM

hooking up = bootie call

it's a more pc way of saying i'm gonna have sex with so and so. Nowadays, hooking up means sex.

Bauer_Power 01-08-2005 12:18 AM

Hooking up means sex. That's what it means
